Appalachian State vs. Coastal Carolina Odds, Picks, and Predictions (11/3/22)

As we finally arrive at week 10 in the College Football Season, we get a matchup of two Sun Belt contenders as the Appalachian State Mountaineers head to Coastal Carolina to face off against the Chanticleers.  Both of these teams still have a chance to win their division but it’s Coastal Carolina who is in the driver’s seat with a 4-1 conference record, so this game is crucial for App State to get this win and steal the tiebreaker.  They currently have a 2-2 conference record and a 5-3 record.  Their schedule does feature some games against some big Power-5 wins including a shootout loss against North Carolina and an upset win against Texas A&M.  Coastal Carolina is currently 7-1 but have yet to play a truly tough competitor, so this game against the Mountaineers will truly test how good this Chanticleer team is.  Let’s break into this game’s picks and predictions:

Appalachian State vs. Coastal Carolina Betting Odds

Despite being on the road, Appalachian State enters this game as slight favorites at -154 moneyline odds.  They are currently spread line favorites at -3 points to win.  I believe their strength of their schedule and their explosive offense is a large part of this reasoning.  They average 36.9 points per game and 459.6 yards per game.  Coastal Carolina is not far off averaging 31.9 points per game and 435 yards per game.  Both these teams have very explosive QBs.  Appalachian State’s Chase Brice currently has 22 TDs and 1921 yards, while Coastal Carolina’s Grayson McCall has 19 TDs and 2061 yards.  The biggest question mark will be how these defenses will do against these strong offenses, as each average around the mid-20s in points allowed per game.

The over/under total is currently 63.5 points.  That is a high margin but makes sense when you look at how these teams average a high amount in points scored while letting up 24-27 points.  Appalachian State did start this season with a 63-61 final finish against North Carolina for a total of 124.

Appalachian State vs. Coastal Carolina Picks & Predictions

My pick: Appalachian State -3 (-110)

I am riding with the Mountaineers on the road and taking Appalachian State’s spread to cover.  I think their strength of schedule is just stronger and Coastal Carolina still hasn’t fully experienced a team that has played with top-level talent.  Appalachian State beat Texas A&M, and although the Aggies have fallen since then they were ranked 6th when they faced off.  The Mountaineers have been strong in recent games on the run and have been averaging over 200 rushing yards per game.  They are averaging 251 passing yards.  Coastal Carolina has allowed more than 20 points per game in every game except for last week’s matchup against Marshall.  Appalachian State’s defense will need to remain strong after letting up high numbers early in the year, they allowed only 3 points in their last game against Robert Morris.  I think this will be a close game reliant on offense, but I think Appalachian State has shown they have the ability to play on the road and win in hostile environments as they did against Texas A&M.  Grayson McCall only has one interception on the year but this Mountaineers defense has taken 5 INTs so far.

As for the over/under I am riding with the over in this game at 63 points as I like both of these team’s offenses and predict a high scoring matchup.  I see both of these teams scoring above 30.

Appalacian St vs Coastal Carolina Key Matchup

Will Camerun Peoples be able to get rolling against this Coastal Carolina defense? Check out the key matchups and mismatches for this game below.

Camerun Peoples vs. Coastal Carolina Defense

Chase Brice will certainly be a big playmaker for the Appalachian State offense but the biggest matchup I am looking at will be Camerun Peoples and the running game against Coastal Carolina.  Peoples leads the rushing attack with over 550 rushing yards and 5 TDs on the year, but they also have RB Nate Noel who has over 300 rushing yards and 3 TDs as well as several other rushing weapons.  They were able to run for over 400 rushing yards against Georgia State.  Coastal Carolina let up 320 rushing yards against Old Dominion and allows typically 139.9 rushing yards a game so they will need to play closer to their average to stop Appalachian State on the ground.  If Peoples and the rest of the running attack have no problem on the ground, it could be a struggling day for the Chanticleer defense.
