Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Houston Astros 8/5/20: Starting Lineups, Betting Odds (Matchup Preview)

Matchup Preview

The Houston Astros (6-4) will again be playing at Chase Field tonight in their second game of a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks (3-8). The Astros took care of business last night against the D-Backs, defeating them by a score of 8-2. Despite not having a great season thus far, George Springer came alive last night and delivered three RBIs for Astros. Houston ate up Madison Bumgarner last night, who joined the D-Backs this offseason following 11 years with the Giants. Cristian Javier, who has an impressive 1.42 ERA on the season, shut down the D-Backs last night on route to the club’s 8th loss of the season. Arizona just hasn’t been able to get it together so far, as their play has been subpar, especially their hitting. The D-Backs weren’t a team with high expectations entering the abbreviated 2020 season, but they’d hope to be playing a bit better than they have been. With this in mind, tonight’s game should go well for the Astros, given that their pitching remains consistent. Houston is throwing Lance McCullers Jr. tonight, who has a below-average ERA of 5.40 on the season. However, Arizona’s starting pitcher for tonight isn’t much better. Robbie Ray will take the mound for the D-Backs tonight, who currently posts an 8.64 ERA on the season. This game will come down to hitting, and the Astros have a clear advantage in that department.

Diamondbacks Analysis

arizona diamondbacksThe abbreviated 2020 MLB season has not been very nice to the Diamondbacks so far. The team currently sits at 3-8 and has failed to score more than five runs in all 11 games. They have been in close games with some quality teams, including the Dodgers and Padres. However, this team’s lack of offense has proven to be a thorn in their side. Only four players on their entire roster are hitting over .200, those being Starling Marte, Ketel Marte, David Peralta, and Christian Walker. Both Martes are hitting around .280, which is respectable. Peralta is the 4th best hitter on this team and is hitting .216, which should say something about this offense. Designated hitter Christian Walker is the brightest spot on this offense, as he is hitting .306 on the year with six RBIs. However, one man cannot carry the load offensively for an entire team.
Pitching has been somewhat of a problem for this team, but they have a few quality starters. Both Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly have played well, as each posts an ERA of 2.70 or lower. The D-Backs signed Madison Bumgarner this offseason in hopes he could be their ace. Bumgarner has not been playing up to that expectation, as he has a 7.04 ERA so far. Tonight, the D-Backs will pitch Robbie Ray. Ray made the All-Star Game with Arizona in 2017 but hasn’t had a great start to this season. He will need to play well and slow down the Astros’ offense if the D-Backs hope to get the upset.

Astros Starting Lineup

  1. Mookie Betts (R) RF
  2. Max Muncy (L) 1B
  3. Justin Turner (R) 3B
  4. Cody Bellinger (L) CF
  5. Enrique Hernandez (R) 2B
  6. Corey Seager (L) SS
  7. A.J. Pollack (R) LF
  8. Joc Pederson (L) DH
  9. Will Smith (R) C

Astros Analysis

houston astrosUnlike the D-Backs, the Astros have been having a solid season up to this point. Despite being swept by the Dodgers in a two-game series, the Astros have been playing very well. They are coming off of two wins in a row, one being against the Angels and the other being against the D-Backs last night. The Astros also have seven of their key players batting over .200 on the season. The biggest performers for Houston so far have been Yuli Gurriel, Carlos Correa, and Michael Brantley. Gurriel is hitting .282 with one home run and three RBIs on the season, and Correa is hitting an impressive .389 on the year with two home runs and six RBIs. The man with the best batting average on the team, however, is Michael Brantley. Brantley is hitting an absurd .438 with one home run and six RBIs. While the Astros have gotten production out of most of their lineup, their star players haven’t been producing the same. Jose Altuve is only hitting .163 on the season, and George Springer is hitting .189. While it might not be as important against a team like the D-Backs, the Astros star players will need to produce against better competition and in the playoffs. As for their pitching, Lance McCullers Jr. will get the start tonight. He is only 26 and has a career ERA of 3.71, so he certainly has some potential. However, his ERA thus far in 2020 is 5.40. The Astros will hope the McCullers can get back on track and have a nice outing for them tonight against Arizona.

Diamondbacks vs Astros Daily Fantasy Angle

carloscorreaFor this matchup’s daily fantasy angle, I’m not going with Altuve, Bregman, or Springer. I think that Carlos Correa should be the play for this game. Last night against the D-Backs, Correa went off with three hits, a home run, an RBI, and two walks. He has an on-base percentage of .488 this year and is batting .389 on the season. I believe that Correa will continue to bat well tonight against a D-Backs team that isn’t exactly anything to write home about. The D-Backs are not starting either of their top two pitchers, so I think that this is a good matchup for Correa and the Astros. Consider starting him in your fantasy lineup tonight if you have him.

Diamondbacks vs Astros Betting Odds

Astros Odds: -130
Diamondbacks Odds: +114
Over/Under: 9.5

The oddsmakers are favoring the Astros in tonight’s matchup, and I agree. When looking at these two teams, it is evident that the Astros simply are more talented across the board than the D-Backs. While the D-Backs have a couple of bright spots, we’re talking about a team that hasn’t scored more than five runs in a game. I could see this game getting ugly for Arizona, which makes me believe that betting the over could be a smart decision in this matchup. Go with the Astros if you’re smart, but take the D-Backs if you feel extra lucky.
