Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets 7/31/20: Starting Lineups, Betting Odds (Matchup Preview)

Matchup Preview

The New York Mets (3-4) head down south to Triust Park to take on their division rival, the Atlanta Braves (4-3). The race for the NL East title is on, and the division is certainly up for grabs this year. With the exception of Miami, who has only played three games due to coronavirus concerns, the Braves are currently on top with a 4-3 record. The Mets are tied with the defending World Series Champion Washington Nationals at 3-4 while the Phillies are at the bottom, having only played three games. Atlanta is coming off a season that saw them go 97-65, finishing in 1st place in the division. The Mets also had a winning record but came in 3rd place behind the Nationals. The Braves are looking to build upon a successful 2019 campaign and hopefully carry their regular-season success into the postseason, which they didn’t do last year. The Mets are a team that many believe have a chance to make some noise in the division, as they boast one of the best rotations in baseball and have a few talented sluggers. Veteran pitcher Rick Porcello is set to take the mound for New York tonight while Atlanta will send Sean Newcomb to the mound.

Braves Analysis

atlanta braves

Last season, the Braves suffered a devastating loss in Game 5 of the NLDS to the St. Louis Cardinals when they gave up ten runs in the very first inning of the game. This offseason, the team also lost former MVP Josh Donaldson in free agency to the Minnesota Twins. While this team might not have all of the star power that they had last year, the Braves still put out an impressive lineup night in and night out. Ronald Acuna Jr. is one of the best young talents in the league, although he hasn’t been hitting particularly well this season. The Braves are returning Freddie Freeman, an All-Star last year, who is hitting .261 thus far. They are also returning Ozzie Albies, who hit .295 for the Braves last year and led the MLB in total hits. Atlanta also signed slugger Marcell Ozuna in free agency, currently hitting a solid .364 for them. One player who has stood out for the Braves thus far is Dansby Swanson, who is hitting .370 with nine RBIs and two HRs. The Braves have the edge in the pitching matchup tonight as well. Sean Newcomb has a 2.70 ERA on the season so far and has a career ERA of 3.86. He is a talented young pitcher who the Braves are hoping can become a top guy for them. When considering Atlanta’s hitting and the fact that they are starting a solid pitcher, I think they have an excellent chance to win tonight’s matchup.

Mets Starting Lineup

  1. Amed Rosario (R) SS
  2. Jeff McNeil (L) 3B
  3. Pete Alonso (R) 1B
  4. Yoenis Cespedes (R) DH
  5. Michael Conforto (L) RF
  6. J.D. Davis (R) LF
  7. Robinson Cano (L) 2B
  8. Wilson Ramos (R) C
  9. Brandon Nimmo (L) CF

Mets Analysis

new york mets

The Mets are coming off a series against the Boston Red Sox that saw them take the first two games and then lose the last two. New York is hoping to end its two-game losing streak tonight in Atlanta. If they wish to get a win tonight, they will need Rick Porcello to play well. The former Cy Young Award winner is not the pitcher he once was but is still a decent starter overall. However, in the first start of the season against the Braves, he did not perform well. The Mets lost the game 14-1, and Porcello earned himself a cringe-worthy 27.00 ERA to start the season. Porcello needs to shake off his last outing, which happened to be against the same team he will be facing tonight. The Mets will also need production out of their best hitters and overall lineup. Every batter in the Mets lineup is hitting above .211, which is a good thing. However, their best hitter, Pete Alonso, is only hitting .222 so far on the year. Alonso will need to get going tonight to give the Mets a chance. Jeff McNeil has been the team’s best hitter thus far, posting a .308 batting average with five RBIs. If the Mets want to win this matchup tonight, they will need to come out swinging.

Braves vs Mets Daily Fantasy Angle

Ozzie Albies

For the fantasy angle for tonight’s matchup, I picked a player you might not have expected to see me talk about. Rather than going with Acuna Jr. or Freddie Freeman, my fantasy pick for tonight is Ozzie Albies. The former All-Star hasn’t been playing great this season, hitting .194 on the season thus far. However, back on July 26th, when the Braves defeated the Mets 14-1, Albies had three hits and three RBIs. The Mets were pitching Rick Porcello that day, and Albies had his best game of the shortened season so far. Given that he will be facing the same pitcher, I think that Albies could be a sleeper pick for your team in fantasy. While he’s not the most prominent name, it is always important to look at different matchups and determine who to start around your star players in fantasy. If available for you, I would recommend throwing Albies into your lineup tonight.

Braves vs Mets Betting Odds

Braves Odds: -135
Mets Odds: +115
Over/Under: 10.5

The Braves are favored to win tonight’s matchup against the Mets, and I agree with the oddsmakers. Although the Mets are a team that I think could be decent this year, the Braves are simply more talented. They have far superior hitting, and they are facing a pitcher who they already carved up once this season. The Braves also have the advantage on the mound, as Newcomb is younger and has been better than Porcello the last couple of years. When it comes to the over/under, it is tempting to want to bet the over, as the Mets lost 14-1 previous time they played. However, I don’t think that the Mets and Porcello will give up that many runs in back to back games. My best suggestion for tonight would be to bet the under and pick the Braves.

I’ve been lucky enough to see both the Nats and Caps win titles in my lifetime, however I have a feeling that my Redskins and Wizards won’t be joining them as champions anytime soon.
