Atlanta Falcons vs. New York Giants Matchup Preview (9/26/21)

Atlanta travels up the east coast to face the New York Giants, and hopefully, secure its first win. Both teams have struggled thus far in the season and are 0-2 through two weeks. However, the Giants should have beaten the Washington Football Team on the road, but an offsides call on a field goal attempt gave Washington’s kicker a second chance. He did not miss again. Atlanta has struggled more than New York, but there are still plenty of areas of opportunity for the Giants. New York’s defense needs to be more consistent. The Giants let backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke drop 30 points on them. For as much potential as Heinicke has, Matt Ryan and other quarterbacks of his stature pose much more of a threat. If New York cleans up some defensive issues, then I like its chances. Daniel Jones will also need to take advantage of this matchup. The Falcons’ defense can’t hold a candlestick to Washington or Denver’s defenses; therefore, he should theoretically have a big game. When Jones shows consistency, everyone else gains confidence. Atlanta’s entire game plan should be to outscore New York. The Giants’ offense has not been reliable for several years, and Atlanta needs to capitalize by just trying to score every time it has the ball. This game could very possibly come down to whoever has the ball last, as a high-scoring game is in the cards.

Atlanta Falcons vs. New York Giants Betting Odds

  • The Facts:

The New York Giants open as slight home favorites with a Moneyline at -165. Meanwhile, the Atlanta Falcons are underdogs at +140. The spread for the Giants is -3 (-110) and +3 (-110) for the Atlanta Falcons. Currently, the over/under total sits at 48.5, with the under (-105) being a slight favorite on the over (-115).

  • The Opinion:

I like the Giants in this one, primarily because they are the home team. I believe these two teams are evenly matched, for the most part, but the Giants have a far superior defense than the Falcons. Atlanta has a slight edge offensively; however, New York will look much better against the Falcons defense. The Giants were one play away from beating the Washington Football Team on the road, so in my opinion, they are closer to relevance than the Falcons. I like the Giants’ Moneyline in this bout, or the spread if it is the Giants at -2.5 or better.

  • My Predictions: New York Giants win 31-27, Giants cover -3 (-110)

Atlanta Falcons Analysis

For a team that has so many offensive weapons, the Falcons are underperforming significantly. Matt Ryan has Calvin Ridley, Mike Davis, Cordarrelle Patterson, Kyle Pitts, Hayden Hurst, and others at his disposal. Still, Atlanta cannot gain any real momentum. Week 2 presented a slightly more optimistic outlook as the Falcons scored 25 points on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ tough defense. Anything is an improvement over the six points the Falcons scored on the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1, though. Unfortunately, there is not much long-term upside for this Falcons team in 2021, as the defense is just hopeless right now. Unless the offense somehow replicates the mid-2000’s Indianapolis Colts, Atlanta will look to win only a handful of games. Terrible defenses almost always limit the upside of a football team. If Atlanta wants to win this game, it will have to put 30+ points on the board and force Daniel Jones to keep up. However, Jones does have some momentum after an intense Week 2 performance against the Washington Football Team.

New York Giants Analysis

The Giants were one minor penalty from being 1-1 and 1-0 in the NFC East through two games. Instead, New York is 0-2 and desperately needs to win this bout against the struggling Atlanta Falcons to avoid an 0-3 start. The Giants showed signs of improvement on offense in Week 2, often moving the ball down the field on the Football Team. In one instance, New York created a hole big enough for Saquon Barkley to burst through, picking up over 40 yards on the play. This will need to be a more common occurrence for the Giants’ offensive line to get more consistency from Barkley. It looks like he is being tackled by all 11 defenders sometimes. Regardless, I like the Giants in this matchup as long as they bring some offensive momentum from Week 2. Home-field advantage is huge in a game with two teams that are so evenly matched.

Atlanta Falcons vs. New York Giants Daily Fantasy Picks

Sterling Shepard has faced two top-tier defenses in the 2021 season and had dominant games against each team. Now, he faces arguably the weakest secondary in the NFL. He should have a massive game against these cornerbacks, especially considering that he has been getting open against much better defenders. Through two games, Shepard has amassed 16 catches on 19 targets for 207 yards and one touchdown. If this production continues in Week 3, Shepard will put up WR1 numbers and be cheaper than many alternative options.

I like Cordarrelle Patterson as a flex play this week. He can score in several different ways, including as a running back or receiver. It is hard to say whether his high usage thus far will continue, but if it does, he has a ton of value because of his playmaking ability. In each game thus far, Patterson has seen seven rushing attempts, which could continue to increase if his effectiveness does not fall off. This week, he saw several targets en route to securing five receptions for 58 yards and one touchdown in Week 2. Keep an eye on Patterson this week.
