Atlanta Hawks vs. New York Knicks Matchup Preview (3/22/22)
For the first game of TNT’s Tuesday slate, the Atlanta Hawks will head north to battle with the New York Knicks in Madison Square Garden. This matchup is not the most exciting that the NBA has to offer, especially since the Eastern Conference play-in picture looks set right now. The Washington Wizards are 4.5 games back of the tenth place Atlanta Hawks with merely 12 games left in their season, so it hardly matters if Atlanta drops a few games. Additionally, Washington poses very little threat with how it has been playing, which makes this a relatively sweat-free game for Atlanta. Still, the Hawks have an outside chance to climb as high as eighth place in the Eastern Conference, which could help their play-in chances substantially, thus, making this a valuable game for them.
Meanwhile, New York has virtually nothing to play for in the next month. It would be doing itself a disservice to continue competing in games with the playoffs completely out of the picture. The Knicks need to grab another top ten pick to add to their core if they want to compete in the future. Ironically, New York has not been a desirable free agent destination for over a decade, so it will need to build its roster in the draft as best as possible to hopefully then attract free agents. My analysis for this game is under the betting odds section, so check out who I think will cover in this matchup!
Atlanta Hawks vs. New York Knicks Betting Odds
Although tempting, I will be sticking to my guns and not betting with the New York Knicks. Therefore, I will be looking at the Atlanta Hawks against the spread. In two games this season against the Knicks, Trae Young has averaged 31 points, six assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game. Remember, Young is amongst the most hated players in Madison Square Garden, largely due to his performance against the Knicks last season in the playoffs. I see Young taking that energy and using it to drive a massive offensive performance. As long as Atlanta does not give up 120+ points, it should take care of the Knicks on the road.

Atlanta Hawks Analysis
Atlanta currently hovers steadily in tenth place in a competitive and tight Eastern Conference. The Hawks are merely one game out of ninth place and two games out of eighth place, and they have 11 games left in the 2021-22 NBA season. Unfortunately, Atlanta is still without John Collins due to a sprained finger and strained foot; his injury status will be updated in two weeks. Even without Collins, Atlanta has managed to string together a few wins, going 4-2 in its past six games. There is plenty to play for right now with the playoffs still within view, so don’t expect any tanking or punting games for the foreseeable future. Trae Young is someone to keep your eyes on; he had 46 and 47 points in two of his past four games but only scored nine and 21 points in the other two! The Hawks will go only as far as Young can take them, and it will require excellent offensive output nightly for them to make the postseason.

New York Knicks Analysis
The incredibly disappointing season for the New York Knicks continues. Still, interestingly enough, they are 5-3 in their past eight games, including wins over the Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, Los Angeles Clippers, Dallas Mavericks, and Washington Wizards. New York also played the Brooklyn Nets within three points and the Memphis Grizzlies to within four points. The only real blowout it experienced during that stretch was in its last game against the Utah Jazz. To be fair, Utah has been a much better team over the past seven weeks or so, recording a 15-5 record since February 1st. Basically, the Knicks can’t even seem to “tank” properly. Regardless, I try and stay away from betting on games with New York in it; there is way too much volatility and uncertainty, especially at this juncture of the season. Adopting the “glass half full” mantra momentarily, R.J. Barrett has finally taken that “next step” that fans have wanted for a little while. Barrett has posted an average of 24 points, six rebounds, and four assists since January 10th and has looked like a future All-Star.
Atlanta Hawks vs. New York Knicks Daily Fantasy Picks
As mentioned above, Trae Young is averaging 31 points, six assists, and nearly four rebounds per game against the New York Knicks this season! Those are not many different numbers than his outrageous season averages; however, I expect him to show off and have an absolutely nuclear offensive game versus New York. The bottom line is that Young thrives in hostile conditions, which very few players can truly do, making this a potential blow-up game for him. It did not take me long to remember that Young has owned the Hawks in the most important moments, so between that and his ungodly averages, he is due for a massive performance. I would highly consider Young in your DFS lineup on Tuesday night.
It will be hard for me to steer away from R.J. Barrett after how excellent he has played in the second half of this season. Barrett has scored at least 30 points in three of his past 11 games, with a few more close calls where he was knocking on the door. He may not be the best DFS player on the slate, but if he exploits this very beatable Hawks defense, he could be the most valuable for your lineup.
