Baltimore Orioles vs New York Yankees 5/15/19: Starting Lineups, Matchup Preview, Betting Odds

TV Section: Baltimore Orioles vs. New York Yankees, 5/15/19 3:05 PM ET, 6:35 PM ET Yankee Stadium, New York, New York, TV: New York (YES), Baltimore (MASN) – Radio: New York (WFAN 660/101.9), Baltimore (Orioles Radio Network)

Matchup Preview:

Let’s play two! After two consecutive rained out games, the Orioles and the Yankees are set to duke it out in back to back games at Yankee stadium. J.A. Happ will square up against David Hess in the first contest, followed by Domingo German and Andrew Cashner in the second game of the day.

Things have been looking up for the Yankees lately as the fight for first place in the East continues. 7-3 in their last 10, the additional days of rest will only help. Rest can’t help bad pitching, though, as J.A. Happ boasts a whopping 4.36 ERA going into today’s game. In his first two starts of the season (both against the Orioles) he went 0-1 with a 6.48 ERA.

Luckily for the Yanks, Hess isn’t looking any better. 1-4 to start the year, his 5.50 ERA isn’t exactly intimidating. Expect both teams to put up upwards of 4 runs in the first game of the day.

As for the second game, it will be more of a pitcher’s contest. Yankees ace Domingo German takes the mound after picking up his MLB-best 7th win in his last outing, and Andrew Cashner for the Orioles is an upgrade from Hess. While Cashner sits at a comfortable 4.25 ERA, his 4-1 record poses some threat to the Yankees lineup.

Yankees Analysis:

Sitting in second place just one game behind the Rays, the Yankees look to jump to first place when the day is done.

The Yankees bats look to get it done in both games today — 3 Yankees are each hitting well above .300 in their last seven games. In a year plagued by injuries, it’s reassuring to say the least. Mike Tauchman sits at the top of the heap with a whopping .385 in 13 plate appearances over the last seven games.

If the Yankees want to take both of these games, we’re going to have to see a stellar performance from J.A. Happ. While there’s nothing certain in the game of baseball, I feel fairly confident in Domingo German’s ability to shut down the struggling Orioles’ lineup in the second game of the day.

Orioles Starting Lineup

1. J. Villar SS
2. D. Smith DH
3. T. Mancini OF
4. C. Davis 1B
5. S. Wilkerson OF
6. R. Ruiz 3B
7. H. Alberto 2B
8. P. Severino C
9. J. Rickard OF

Orioles Analysis:

The Orioles occupy last place in the AL East, and they haven’t exactly looked like they’re going to pull out of it anytime soon. The O’s are 4-6 in their last 10 games.

Not only has their pitching looked horrendous, but their hitting over their last seven games has been arguably worse. Chris Davis, yes, that Chris Davis, has their highest average over the last seven at just .273. If they don’t get the bats going, and soon, it’s going to be a long season. If David Hess goes out and throws a nice game, I don’t see why they couldn’t take 1 of 2. If they can somehow start heating up at the plate, I’d say they for sure take 1 of 2.

Orioles vs Yankees Betting Odds:

Who’s going to win today? I have to go with the Orioles in the first game and Yankees in the second. Despite the negative things I had to say about the Orioles, I do think it’s entirely possible they have themselves a game against Happ. I don’t think this will extend against the Yankees’ star Domingo German. As long as the Yankees can continue hitting the ball well, they shouldn’t have a problem getting a win with Domingo on the mound.
