Baltimore Orioles vs Boston Red Sox 4/13/19: Starting Lineups, Matchup Preview, Betting Odds

Matchup Preview

This will be the second of a 3-game weekend series between the Baltimore Orioles and the Boston Red Sox. Both teams come into the game with a record of 5-9, tied for 3rd place in the AL East behind Tampa Bay and New York.

Both teams have had relatively slow starts to the season. Baltimore started the season 4-2 but then proceeded to lose 7 of their next 8. Boston’s first 12 games saw them go 3-9, but they have won their last two against the Blue Jays and Orioles respectively.

Last night’s matchup final was a 6-4 Sox win. Boston pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez had a solid performance giving up just 2 runs over 6 and 2/3 innings. The offense was aided by a solo homer from Andrew Benintendi and a 3 for 4 performance from Xander Bogaerts. On the Orioles side, Smith Jr. and Nunez both hit out home runs in the loss.

The Saturday afternoon game will feature Andrew Cashner on the bump for Baltimore and Rick Porcello for Boston. Cashner comes into the game with a 2-1 record and an ERA of 5.28 while Porcello comes in with even rougher stats, 0-2 with an ERA just over 13.00.

The Orioles will desperately be trying to end their skid while Boston tries to add to their current 2-game win streak.

Orioles Analysis

A good Orioles season still seems unlikely even through the first few games. The club has just been struggling as a whole in recent years.

Offensively, they currently rank towards the bottom of the MLB in most categories. They do get some run support every now and then, but that support is almost never enough for the struggling pitching. The team’s standout hitter thus far has definitely been Trey Mancini. The 27-year-old is currently batting .333 with 6 home runs and 12 RBIs. Hanser Alberto and Jonathan Villar have also been able to get on base a decent amount and produce some runs. But a year after having one of the worst seasons in MLB history, Chris Davis is still struggling. He is yet to get a hit in 2019 and has started the season 0 for 33.

At the moment, the Orioles also have arguably the worst pitching in all of the MLB. They are the only club to have a team ERA of over 6.00 and few of their starters have turned in even decent performances. I guess you could say that the team’s best current starter is David Hess. He comes in at 1-2 with an ERA of 3.32.

Cashner, who will be starting this afternoon, managed to win his last start against the A’s. He is supposed to be the teams ace and can hopefully turn in a solid performance against the Sox lineup today.

Red Sox Starting Lineup

  1. Andrew Benintendi
  2. Mookie Betts
  3. Mitch Moreland
  4. J.D. Martinez
  5. Xander Bogaerts
  6. Rafael Devers
  7. Dustin Pedroia
  8. Jackie Bradley Jr.
  9. Christian Vazquez

Red Sox Analysis

Finally, a decent starting pitching performance for Boston! Red Sox starters had been getting banged up game after game until Eduardo Rodriguez final turned in a solid 6 and 2/3 last night. And it appears that the team’s offense might be heating up too.

In the lineup, the team’s standout hitters so far have arguably been JD Martinez, Xander Bogaerts, and Mitch Moreland. Martinez comes into the game batting .321 with 3 homers and 9 RBIs. Bogaerts comes in hitting .311 after a solid performance last night and Moreland has 5 home runs and 12 RBIs. Benintendi, Devers, and Betts are also consistent contributors and they are bound to break out offensively at any moment.

On the mound, it has actually been the bullpen who has won the majority of Boston’s games. Brandon Workman, Ryan Brasier, Colton Brewer, and Matt Barnes all have ERAs under 2.00 and have shown some nasty stuff. The starting pitching, however, has been horrendous. There have been few games in which the starter has given up fewer than 5 runs.

And possibly the worst pitching performances’ this season has come from Porcello. He has given up a total 16 hits and 11 earned runs over a total of just 7 and 13 innings, plus he doesn’t have great career numbers against Baltimore. He’s going to have to buckle down if the Sox want to win this one.

Orioles vs Red Sox Betting Odds

I’ve got to say that I think the Red Sox are likely to win this one. Over the last few games, they have shown some decent improvement since the season has begun and are starting to regain their old form. Moneyline consensus currently has the Red Sox at -240 and the Orioles at +210. The predicted final score currently has Boston winning 5-4. Total score over/under for the game is set at 10.5.
