The Detroit Lions have had two very tough matchups through the first couple of weeks of the 2021 NFL season. They have competed with both the San Francisco 49ers and the Green Bay Packers for 60 minutes. I must admit that I am pretty impressed. There is a certain level of pride that the Lions are playing with, and while things are still far from perfect, there is some hope for the future in Detroit. Baltimore has had a tumultuous start to its 2021 season with a Week 1 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders and a Week 2 win against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Ravens have had many injuries to their team but still found a way to win against the Chiefs this past week. Detroit has a few playmakers that could give the Ravens some trouble. T.J. Hockenson, D’Andre Swift, Jamaal Williams, and Quintez Cephus have all looked very solid through the team’s first two games. Baltimore will have to lock those key players down to build a lead. Offensively, Baltimore should have no issues putting a substantial number of points on the board against Detroit. Despite all of the Ravens’ injuries, they still have an elite quarterback in Lamar Jackson and several other talented players at the skill positions, including Marquise “Hollywood” Brown. This game will be interesting as Detroit could keep it close and cover the spread; however, Baltimore will probably stomp on that weak defense en route to a comfortable victory.

Baltimore will enter Ford Field in Detroit as 9-point favorites over the Lions, while the Lions will be 9-point home underdogs. Detroit’s Moneyline sits at +380, and Baltimore’s Moneyline is at -400. The current over/under total rests at 49.5, with even odds for both the over and the under.
- The Opinion:
My initial feeling tells me that Detroit has a chance for a backdoor cover, much like in Week 1 when the Lions outscored the Niners 23-3 to end the game. However, in the end, I decided that I like the Ravens to cover. It should be very close with the Lions possibly even having a drive late in the fourth quarter to try and get the game to within one score, but they will be shut down. The Ravens got right out of a concerning Week 1 funk and upset one of the best teams in the NFL, Kansas City, in a gutsy game. I trust that Lamar Jackson and company will take care of business, and Detroit will struggle enough offensively to justify a Baltimore cover.

Baltimore Ravens Analysis
Well, I was wrong about Baltimore. The Ravens played their hearts out against the Kansas City Chiefs. Their Week 1 discombobulation did not carry over into the Chiefs game at all. Sure, the Ravens could have played better at times; however, there is no substitute for grit in a league where it is essential in order to win consistently. I like the relationship that Coach Harbaugh and Lamar Jackson have. It instills confidence in bettors that there is nothing but trust between the two guys, evidenced by the bold call to go-for-it on fourth down late in the game. The first down iced the game and got the Ravens their first win over the Chiefs in the Mahomes-Jackson era. The road loss against the Las Vegas Raiders in overtime looks substantially better now that the Raiders went on the road and handed it to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2. Perhaps the Raiders are the real deal, too. Regardless, Baltimore is a far superior team to Detroit and the Ravens’ poise against the Chiefs to secure a crucial home win tells me that this game against the Lions should be a lock.

Detroit Lions Analysis
I feel for Detroit. The Lions have come out strong in both of their first two games and played extremely tough football. They had the Packers and Niners scared for a little bit. Unfortunately, Detroit has lost its top two cornerbacks in Jeff Okudah and Ifeatu Melifonwu to season-ending injuries. Melifeonwu’s injury status is not official, but it is assumed to be bad. The Lions already struggled on defense, but these injuries will make it extremely difficult to compete against high-quality teams as they lack depth at cornerback. On the bright side, the Lions have some offensive playmakers that can be valuable pieces for their future. Wide receiver Quintez Cephus, tight end T.J. Hockenson, and running backs Jamaal Williams and D’Andre Swift look great thus far in the season. Additionally, Jared Goff has played quite well given the less-than-ideal circumstances he is playing under. This year will not be the Lions’ year to compete in the NFC North, but they do not look as far behind as previous years. If they can get a few more pieces on both sides of the ball, and the team plays inspired under head coach Dan Campbell, then you never know.

Marquise “Hollywood” Brown has been fighting off injuries this season, but his performance against the Kansas City Chiefs was eye-opening as he looked to be in full health. Brown caught six passes for 113 yards and a touchdown in Week 2 against the Chiefs. In short, he should have an absolute field day against the Detroit Lions because they are missing their top two cornerbacks to significant injuries. Additionally, he would probably have a huge game even with those two guys playing as he is just more talented. Lamar Jackson will cause all kinds of havoc and confusion to this Lions defense, and Brown will certainly have some huge plays and a touchdown or two.
Quintez Cephus is an exciting flex play in Week 3. Cephus has developed an evident rapport with quarterback Jared Goff through just two games together. Cephus almost pulled down an incredible one-handed touchdown against the Packers that had to catch Goff’s attention. Against the Packers, Cephus caught four of his seven targets for 63 yards and a touchdown. He could have a similar game against the Ravens this upcoming week, especially if Tyrell Williams is still unable to play. Keep an eye on Cephus in the coming days as a flex play.
