Ben Roethlisberger Fantasy Football Outlook & Value 2019

Ben Roethlisberger missing the playoffs with the Steelers in 2018 snapped a 4-year post-season streak. There was a lot of off-field drama for the team last year, and for better or worse, that will come to an end in 2019. La’Veon Bell and Antonio Brown are no longer with the Steelers. Brown’s departure in particular will hurt Roethlisberger’s fantasy stock. His ADP has dropped to just 11.01 and his auction value out of $200 is $26. When you can get Drew Brees for $27, I see $26 being quite overpriced for a Big Ben that no longer has Antonio Brown. Granted he did finish first in passing yards last season, but I don’t see that happening again without A.B.

Of course, there are those who disagree. The Athletic Pittsburgh’s Rob Rossi had this to say about the Steelers going into 2019.

This is opinion, though, the same way that I would counter that by saying I don’t think the Steelers will make the playoffs in 2019. Without Brown, I see Big Ben having one of his worst fantasy seasons of his career. Juju Smith-Schuster is still a solid target, but Donte Moncrief lining up at the second starting WR spot will play a big role in Pittsburgh’s offensive decline.

Yes, there is the fact that Roethlisberger had the most passing yards of anyone in the NFL last year. He has that potential as his ceiling, but at the same time I see a low floor for the veteran QB. With an ADP of 11.01, there’s likely no reason for one to pounce on Roethlisberger too early. If he’s the top QB on the board and you’re in the market for one, by all means take him. I just don’t think his production is as guaranteed as it’s been in the past. That’s to say the risk/reward ratio is rather high.

Another thing to look at is the fact that Roethlisberger was 33rd in the league last year in interceptions. He had a whopping 16 on the year, and that was with the highly-skilled AB who had the ability to go up and get passes. That’s a stat I don’t see improving this year, and interceptions have a way of sneakily counteracting many of the yards that Roethlisberger throws for.

Pittsburgh SteelersJames Conner showed nice improvement last year. He finished 11th in the NFL in rushing yards at 973 and tied for 3rd at the RB position with 12 TDs. This is great news for Steelers fans, but not for Ben Roethlisberger fantasy owners. With Antonio Brown gone and James Conner on the rise, that could mean more focus on the run game which in turn would limit Big Ben’s passing production. It’s important to remember that if the Steelers find a formula for winning (like an increased run game) and it doesn’t necessarily involve Roethlisberger airing out passes that account for a plethora of yards but many interceptions, they’ll take it (without thought to Roethlisberger fantasy owners).
