Boston Celtics vs. Minnesota Timberwolves 01/02/19: Starting Lineups, Matchup Breakdown, Odds, Daily Fantasy, Betting
Boston Celtics vs. Minnesota Timberwolves Preview
Both the Boston Celtics (21-15) and the Minnesota Timberwolves (17-20) could use a win to start of 2019 right as they both struggled closing out 2018. The Celtics, who once looked like a top three team in the East, have dropped to the fifth spot as they have split five of their last 10. It also seemed like Minnesota was finding their footing after trading Jimmy Butler, but they would be way out of playoff contention if the postseason started today, sitting in the 13 spot having lost six of their last 10.
The Celtics will be looking to close out the season series with a sweep over Minnesota in TD Garden tonight. On December 1, in Minnesota, Gordon Hayward led Boston with 30 points and nine rebounds to take a 118-109 win. Derrick Rose led the Timberwolves, but he is questionable for tonight’s game.
Even with the return of Horford, the Celtics are still looking a little thin up front, so look for Karl-Anthony Towns to try and exploit that weakness.

Boston Celtics Starting Lineup
The results of Boston’s three-game road trip out West didn’t exactly go as planned. They were able to get a win over the Grizzlies in FedExForum, but against two surging teams in the Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs, they were blown out.
Against the Spurs, Boston started the game off well, looking tight defensively in the first quarter as they held San Antonio to 17 points, but that all unraveled in the third quarter as they allowed San Antonio to score 46.
Al Horford was back but played limited minutes, and Jaylen Brown and Terry Rozier were able to come up with big performances off the bench as other players struggled. While Jayson Tatum had a double-double, the trip out West was a picture of inconsistency for the second-year forward, and he continues to struggle from beyond the arch. What the Celtics are going to get from Gordon Hayward also continues to be an unknown on a nightly basis. He was unable to score in 22 minutes on Monday.
Minnesota Timberwolves Starting Lineup
At one point, it seemed like Minnesota was rolling and the trade, which brought Robert Covington and Dario Saric to the Timberwolves, seemed to be working in the team’s favor. Minnesota has won three of their last five games, but they don’t seem to be anywhere close to where they’d like to be.
The Wolves’ starters have mostly played well, especially Karl-Anthony Towns, who is averaging 31 points, 18 rebounds and over four blocks per game in his last three games. They could definitely use some help off the bench though. Although Covington’s transition to Minnesota has been smooth, Saric has struggled a bit lately.
The Timberwolves offense would probably have fared at least a bit better recently, but both Jeff Teague and Derrick Rose have been sidelined with ankle injuries.
Defensively, Minnesota will have to be on point tonight. Boston’s thin front line with Al Horford still playing limited minutes is not a situation that the Timberwolves can count on. In their last loss against the Pelicans, with Anthony Davis out, the Timberwolves allowed Julius Randle to score 33 points in a 114-123 loss.
Boston Celtics vs. Minnesota Timberwolves Betting Odds
The Boston Celtics are -7 point favorites to win at home tonight. The Celtics are 113-50 at home and 158-66 as the favorite.
Minnesota is 48-97 on the road and 46-112 as the underdog.
