Celtics Analysis

Boston CelticsThe post-All-Star break schedule for the Boston Celtics has not yielded the results coach Brad Stevens likely hoped for. The Celtics were right there with the NBA-leading Milwaukee Bucks last Thursday but lost 97-98. While you can sometimes take a moral victory in such a close loss to a top team, the Celtics can’t take much positive away from their Saturday 116-126 loss to the 16-44 Chicago Bulls.

Boston got off to a hot start but struggled to score in the second quarter as they scored just 18 points while the Bulls had 36 points in the quarter. Boston tried to rally back, but it wasn’t enough as they saw Zach LaVine and Lauri Markkanen go off for 42 and 35 points apiece. Markkanen also added 15 rebounds, which was more than four Boston starters combined.

Despite the loss, Celtics guard Kyrie Irving still has high hopes for a late playoff run.

“In the playoffs, when we can plan for a team, prepare for a team, I still don’t see anybody beating us in seven games,” Irving said.

In the loss, Irving led the Celtics with 37 points and 10 assists. Al Horford added 19 points and Jaylen Brown came off the bench for 14 points. Center Aron Baynes did not play in the game and is unlikely to play against Toronto.

Raptors Analysis

Toronto RaptorsLike the Celtics, the Raptors post-All Star break schedule has not gone according to plan. They nearly lost at home against San Antonio before escaping with a win in the final seconds on Friday night, and on Sunday, with Kawhi Leonard sitting out for load management once again, the Raptors were routed by the Orlando Magic 113-98.

Marc Gasol got his first Raptors start and looked good in limited minutes with 16 points, five rebounds and five assists, but the Raptors just couldn’t get enough offense with Leonard out. The Magic had a 10-point lead after the first quarter and then outscored them in the third and fourth as well to secure the win.

Nikola Vucevic and Terrance Ross gave the Raptors defense headaches as they scored 23 and 28 points.

With Leonard out, Kyle Lowry took on the scoring burden and finished with 19 points and 10 assists. Pascal Siakam, Danny Green, Serge Ibaka, and Jodie Meeks all finished with double figures as well, but it wouldn’t be enough.

Leonard should be back tonight, but that won’t be an automatic win for the Raptors, since the Celtics have seemed to have their number this season.
