Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees 4/16/19: Starting Lineups, Matchup Preview, Betting Odds

Matchup Preview

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, it has finally arrived; the most famous rivalry in baseball and maybe even in sports history. It is the first 2019 showdown between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees.

The two teams are expected to finish at the top of the division once again, but both have had relatively slow starts to the season. The Red Sox come in with a record of 6-11 and the Yankees not much better at 6-9. In fact, other than the Tamp Bay Rays, the AL East as a whole seems to be struggling.

In terms of both pitching and hitting, the Yankees overall have been a bit better this season. They come in with a team ERA just over 4.00 while the Red Sox team ERA is quite high at just under 6.00. The Yanks team average sits at .252, not great but not as bad as the Sox .236.

The first game of this series will feature a matchup between Chris Sale and James Paxton. Neither has had particularly strong seasons thus far. Sale comes in 0-3 with a whopping ERA of 9.00 while Paxton comes in at 1-2 with an ERA of 6.00. Both look to get back on track tonight.

Red Sox Starting Lineup

Red Sox Analysis

So far this season it just hasn’t been pretty. The Sox have consistently been struggling to gain any ground in the AL East and each time the team looks to be turning around, they seem to prove their fans wrong.

Not everything has gone poorly, but the primary reason for the Sox’s struggles has been its pitching. Chris Sale has started 3 games this season and hasn’t been even close to impressive in any. Rick Porcello can’t seem to find any command over his pitches, and even Nathan Eovaldi can’t seem to give up fewer than 5 runs a start. Both David Price and Eduardo Rodriguez have looked good at times, but neither has consistently shown the pitching necessary to take Boston back to the playoffs, let alone finish with a winning record.

On the offensive side, it has been nice seeing Pedroia at second base again. He has been struggling at the plate but is hopeful to start producing more and more as he resettles into regular season play. JD Martinez, Zander Bogaerts, and Andrew Benintendi have hit quite well, but the rest of the team has fallen behind drastically. And that includes 2018 MVP Mookie Betts. In terms of power, Mitch Moreland started the season really well but has fallen silent over the last few games.

If the Red Sox are to get back on track, starting pitchers desperately need to start hitting their spots and regain command of the zone. Manager Alex Cora seems to be staying hopeful, but if this kind of play goes on any longer even his optimism will disappear.

Yankees Starting Lineup

Yankees Analysis

Looking at how the Yankees have played the majority of their games; it feels as though they should be 9-6 instead of 6-9. The pitching hasn’t been great, but it hasn’t been awful, and they have led at some point in most games. The team’s offense has been hindered by absences of players like Giancarlo Stanton and Miguel Andujar, but run production is still there. So, what has been going wrong?

First of all, what was expected to be arguably the best bullpen in the MLB has been quite underwhelming. Several games have slipped away from New York in late innings and any decent starting performance seems to be in some way foiled by the bullpen’s inability to lock down games. The team’s defense (not to mention that of the Red Sox as well) has been shaky and inconsistent too.

Pitching-wise, both Tanaka and German have been good for the starters. Offensively, Clint Frazier, Gary Sanchez, and Gleyber Torres all deserve honorable mentions for their good performances. However, the offensive rock thus far has without a doubt been DJ LeMahieu. And Aaron Judge has been showing signs of confidence too. Things should get rolling when his inevitable hot streak comes around.

Red Sox vs Yankees Betting Odds

With the way Boston’s season has been going and the Yankees playing at home, New York is a safe bet for this one. Sale has been awful so far, and while he does have good success against the Yankees, it’s hard to believe that much will have changed between this start and his last one. The Yankees are picked to win at -105.
