Boston Red Sox at Chicago White Sox 5/2/19: Starting Lineups, Matchup Preview, Betting Odds

Matchup Preview

A primetime battle of the Sox will be officially starting tonight in Chicago. Both the Red Sox and White Sox come into tonight’s game below the .500 mark, but both have been playing well over their last few games. Both are 6-4 over their last 10 games and both teams won their last series.

The Red Sox held down Fenway Park with a sweep of the Oakland A’s. The pitching dazzled in all 3-games (most notably Rick Porcello who threw 8 innings of two-hit ball) and the offense was also solid. They look to keep up the pace starting tonight and throughout the four-game series against Chicago.

The White Sox, on the other hand, took two of three from Baltimore. They played a doubleheader yesterday and although they lost the first one, Yonder Alonso hit a two-out walk-off single to give Chicago a 7-6 win. However, the pitching wasn’t great in either game of the doubleheader as Carlos Rondon was shaken up in the 4thinning of game one.

The Sox will send David Price to the bump tonight and the White Sox pitcher will be Lucas Giolito. Price comes in at 1-2 with an ERA of 3.60. He’s pitched well in his last 3 starts. This will be Giolito’s first start since going to the DL in mid-April. He is 2-1 with an ERA of 5.30.

Red Sox Starting Lineup

Red Sox Analysis

So, where does Boston stand at the moment? They are still three games below .500 at 14-17 and are 4thplace in the AL East. They have, however, won their last three games and have been playing much more convincing baseball of late.

What has been going right? For starters, the pitching has changed from awful to actually decent. Starters are finally turning in solid outings, and the bullpen (notably Walden, Barnes, and Brasier) has been holding things down late in the games. Michael Chavis gave the team some much needed young energy and it looks as if Mookie is starting to turn things up. Mitch Moreland has already hit nine home runs and Christian Vazquez has been solid in replacing the departed Blake Swihart.

What still needs to be fixed? The bottom of the lineup definitely needs to step up. Tzu-Wei Lin and Jackie Bradley Jr. have been struggling a lot and Sandy Leon is fighting to bring his average up to a mere .100. The team is also still without their ace, Chris Sale. His starts have been getting better but he is still without a win on the season (0-5 with an ERA over 6.00). Despite these continuing negatives, the team’s morale is definitely up and looking to gain ground in the tough AL East.

David Price looks to turn in another solid start and even his record at 2-2. He’s been good his last three times out and it’s likely he’s going to turn in another solid outing tonight.

White Sox Starting Lineup

White Sox Analysis

Coming into the game at 13-15, this series could be a great opportunity for Chicago to break .500 and move into second place in the NL West, where they trail Cleveland by 2.5 games and Minnesota by 5.

Most of the White Sox news this season has centered around Tim Anderson, and why wouldn’t it. The shortstop has been absolutely mashing. He comes into tonight’s game batting .365 with 6 home runs and 18 RBIs. Another big offensive power for Chicago has been Yoan Moncada. He’s currently batting .301with 6 home runs and 20 RBIs. And we can’t forget about Jose Abreu: 6 home runs and a whopping 30 RBIs.

However, despite having such a good offense, the White Sox have been struggling with pitching. They currently have a team ERA of 5.32, good for third worst in the majors. None of their regular starters have ERAs below 5.00. Luckily enough, the bullpen hasn’t been awful.

Let’s see if Giolito can turn around the team’s starting woes and turn in a good outing tonight.

Red Sox at White Sox Betting Odds

Boston is playing better, and with the White Sox’ struggling Giolito on the mound, it is likely that the Red Sox will grab a road win tonight.
