Matchup Preview

The series finale takes place today at Fenway at 1:05 PM ET. The Red Sox have clinched the series victory with two wins in the last two days. In last night’s 6-3 loss, the White Sox scored all of their runs in the first three innings and were shutout the last six. The White Sox have no fallen to 36-41 as the Red Sox sit at a nice 44-37, albeit still 8.0 games back in the AL East.

Left-handed ace Chris Sale gets the go for the Red Sox in today’s matchup. Despite posting a less than impressive 3-7 record on the year, some of his other stats are slightly more on par with his caliber of pitching. He has an ERA of 3.59 going into today’s game and has fanned 138 on the year. He’s posted a WHIP of 1.017 on the year with a WAR of 1.8 through 16 starts.

Reynaldo Lopez hasn’t been a guy the White Sox have liked to see take the mound this year. He’s wielding a rather high 6.23 ERA on the year with only 80 Ks. The White Sox are 7-9 in games he’s started. In one game started at Fenway in his career, he gave up 6 hits and just 1 earned run through 6.1 innings.

Red Sox Analysis

The biggest problem with the Red Sox this year isn’t necessarily something they can control: it’s their division competitors. The Yankees and Rays have pieced together a nice first half of the season thus far, and it’s seeming to be increasingly difficult for the Sox to claw their way back into the top of the division.

In the two games of this series played thus far, the Red Sox have posted a total of 22 hits. They looked like an elite team in last night’s contest, barely even allowing for speculation that the White Sox would get back into the game. Chavis and Devers have both taken Lopez deep once before in 2 at bats and 5 at bats, respectively.

Chris Sale picked up a ND in his last start against the Blue Jays, but he gave up 3 earned runs through 5.0 innings pitched which ultimately resulted in a 7-5 Red Sox victory. In one game pitched against the White Sox this season, Sale went 6.0 innings giving up 3 hits and no runs. He’s 0-2 in home starts on the year with an ERA of 3.79.

Chicago White Sox Starting Lineup

1. Leury Garcia (S) CF
2. Yoan Moncada (S) 3B
3. Jose Abreu (R) 1B
4. Yonder Alonso (L) DH
5. Eloy Jimenez (R) LF
6. Charlie Tilson (L) RF
7. Tim Anderson (R) SS
8. Yolmer Sanchez (S) 2B
9. Wellington Castillo (R) C
SP. Reynaldo Lopez (R) 4-7

White Sox Analysis

As the year progresses, it’s becoming more and more clear that this season is just a part of the White Sox’s path back into being a serious contender. They show flashes of being a great baseball team, but counteract that almost as frequently. The young talent on their team is promising, but not enough to get it done this year.

Garcia, Anderson, and Jay all recorded multiple hits for the White Sox in last night’s contest. The hitting was there, it was just not followed up on in a way to produce runs. Rondon and Garcia are both 2-6 against Sale in their careers. The bats will have to be extra hot for the White Sox in this one, as Reynaldo Lopez hasn’t been very masterful in limiting runs on the year.

In the month of June, Lopez has given up 15 runs in 21.1 innings pitched, putting him at an ERA of 6.33 (0.1 higher than his season ERA) for the month. So, unfortunately, that ERA isn’t inflated due to a couple of bad starts early on, it’s how Lopez is currently performing. Betts, Bogaerts, and Bradley Jr. are the only Red Sox hitters who have at least an AB against Lopez hitting below .200.

Red Sox vs. White Sox

The line is currently set at BOS -350 CWS +290. As of now, it hasn’t moved from there. As fun as it would be to recommend betting the White Sox in this one, I just can’t in good conscience do it. The Red Sox will likely exit today’s game with a sweep in the series. Lopez has simply not been a strong enough pitcher to even warrant considering the White Sox stealing a win. The over/under is currently set at 9 (o: -120, u: +100). The way these two clubs have been swinging the bat in the first two games, I’d recommend taking the over.
