Brooklyn Nets at Los Angeles Lakers 3/22/19: Starting Lineups, Matchup Preview, Betting Odds

Brooklyn Nets at Los Angeles Lakers Preview

The Brooklyn Nets will be looking to continue to secure playoff positioning as they are on the road tonight against the Los Angeles Lakers, who seem to be about a loss away from playoff elimination.

Brooklyn is currently in seventh place in the East with a 37-36 record, but the Miami Heat are hot on their heels with a three-game streak, and the Orlando Magic are not far behind with a streak of their own. Brooklyn won their last game, but they are 5-5 in their last 10 games. The Lakers seem to be the next team that will be on the Western Conference cutting room floor. The Lakers are 31-40 on the season and 11th in the West. Success has been hard to come by as they have lost their last four and are 1-9 in their last 10 games.

The last time the Lakers and Nets met was on December 18, with the Nets winning at home 115-110. D’Angelo Russell had 22 points and 13 assists against his former team, while the Lakers were led by LeBron James with 36 points, 13 rebounds, and eight assists.

Nets Analysis

Brooklyn NetsThe Brooklyn Nets are in the middle of a seven-game road trip and they almost entered tonight’s game against the Lakers winless on the trip if it were not for D’Angelo Russell’s heroics.

The Nets started both halves out very slow in their 123-121 Tuesday night win over the Sacramento Kings. But they were led by Russell in the fourth quarter, with the Nets outscoring the Kings 45-18. Russell finished with 44 points and 12 assists in the game.

“When he locks in and he’s on fire, there aren’t many people who can stop him,” Nets forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson said. “I’m proud of him. I played against him in college when he was saying ‘zero people can guard me.’ Just to see that transition, to see him keep getting better, it’s amazing.”

Russell likely hopes to have another big night as he is back in Los Angeles against the team that traded him. Russell has to be thinking he got the better end of that deal as Brook Lopez is no longer in LA, and the Nets seem to be on their way to the playoffs.

Lakers Analysis

LosAngelesLakersThe Lakers needed a big run in the final stretch of the regular season to try to get into the playoffs, and they’ve come up way short of that. To say they are struggling is an understatement at this point as they have lost nine of their last 10.

Their most recent loss came Tuesday night against the Milwaukee Bucks, 101-115. The Bucks were without Giannis Antetokounmpo and Malcolm Brogdon is also out with an injury so the Lakers were unable to take advantage of a shorthanded Bucks lineup.

The Bucks jumped out to an early lead in both halves, outscoring the Lakers by 10+ points in both the first and third quarters to coast to the win.

With LeBron James sitting out, the Lakers turned to Kyle Kuzma and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope off the bench for scoring. Kuza finished with 17 points, and Caldwell-Pope had a standout game with 35 points. Rajon Rondo also contributed with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
