Brooklyn Nets vs New York Knicks 2/16/22: Starting Lineups, Matchup Preview, Betting Odds, Predictions

Brooklyn Nets vs. New York Knicks Matchup Preview (2/16/22)

The new-look Brooklyn Nets will merely need a bus to travel to Madison Square Garden to battle their cross-town rivals, the New York Knicks. Brooklyn was very busy before the trade deadline, parting ways with James Harden and Paul Millsap and bringing in Seth Curry, multiple first-rounders, Ben Simmons, and Andre Drummond. This was a profitable trade for the Nets, who got draft capital, Simmons, and two significant rotation pieces to add to their really thin roster. In their last game, the Nets were finally able to snap a massive losing streak at home against the Sacramento Kings. Seth Curry proved to be a timely addition to a team struggling to score the ball as he put up 23 points.

New York currently stands at 12th in the Eastern Conference with a record of 25-33. The Knicks were unable to fix their troubles last year in free agency and somehow got worse. The additions of Kemba Walker and Evan Fournier hardly helped this team as they still rank 27th in points per game, 25th in offensive efficiency, and 26th in eFG% (effective field goal percentage.) New York will look to break through this slump that it is in, having only won one of its past seven games. The Knicks could grab a home win against the lowly Nets, but it will take a strong shooting night and an above-average game from Julius Randle. Under the betting odds section, I cover the likely result of this inner-city matchup!

Brooklyn Nets vs. New York Knicks Betting Odds

The New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets are two teams I have blacklisted from betting on in the past few months. Brooklyn is one of the worst covering teams in the NBA, and New York is as sporadic and inconsistent as it comes. For instance, the Knicks have merely won one of their past seven games, but do you know who the one team they beat was? Of course, it was the Golden State Warriors. If I had to bet on this game, and a gun was to my head, I would lean towards the Nets against the spread. Brooklyn has just added several significant pieces to its roster and should see some light at the end of the tunnel.

Brooklyn Nets Starting Lineup

PG: Patty Mills
SG: Seth Curry
SF: Bruce Brown Jr.
PF: Kessler Edwards
C: Andre Drummond

Brooklyn Nets Analysis

Brooklyn just made a huge trade before the deadline, despite many people believing that the Nets would stay stagnant and wait out the days until Kevin Durant returns from his injury, sometime after the All-Star Break. Additionally, Kyrie Irving is still not playing home games or away games in Toronto or New York, such as this one. Ben Simmons probably won’t play until after the All-Star Break, too, so that leaves the Nets vulnerable once again. Luckily, Brooklyn did add two veteran players, Seth Curry and Andre Drummond, who will fit well into the system it has created and could give the Nets hope while they sit back and anxiously wait for Simmons’ and Durant’s return to the lineup.

New York Knicks Starting Lineup

PG: Kemba Walker
SG: Quentin Grimes
SF: Evan Fournier
PF: Julius Randle
C: Mitchell Robinson

New York Knicks Analysis

The New York Knicks have been in a complete rut over the past several weeks; however, Julius Randle has played some phenomenal basketball in the past six games. Randle has averaged 29 points, 13 rebounds, and seven assists during that span, which is just insane. Still, back-to-back losses to the Portland Trail Blazers, without C.J. McCollum, Damian Lillard, Norman Powell, Robert Covington, and the Oklahoma City Thunder, who did not have Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is not a good sign. Those are abysmal losses, even for the Knicks. In the Portland game, they were able to get strong efforts from Kemba Walker and Quentin Grimes. Still, Evan Fournier and Mitchell Robinson played terribly, combining for merely six points in 50 minutes. It’s going to take more than just one player performing better to fix this Knicks team, and it has to happen soon, or the playoffs will be out of the question.

Brooklyn Nets vs. New York Knicks Daily Fantasy Picks

Without R.J. Barrett, the New York Knicks have no option but to lean heavily on the back of Julius Randle. At times, Randle has been fairly inefficient this season but is still a terrific talent who can fill up the stat sheet. Randle has put together a decent season of 20 points, ten rebounds, and five assists and has similar results in 20 career games without Barrett on the floor. Recently, though, Julius Randle has been an absolute machine. Randle has averaged over 29 points, 13 rebounds, and seven assists in his past six games on 46% from the field. While efficiency is still a concern on the court, it hardly matters in DFS. You have to jump in with both feet when you get a player posting numbers like there. As far as DFS goes, you cannot talk yourself out of playing Randle against a defense that has struggled as much as Brooklyn has in the past few months.

It’s hard to suggest anyone other than Seth Curry from Brooklyn in DFS. His first game for the Nets was exceptional: he scored 23 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and dished out five assists. Curry has shot it well all season, so this does not come as much of a surprise as it might have in previous seasons. His shooting split is hovering around 49/40/88, just shy of the elusive 50/40/90 split. He could get hot again in this game as he should get plenty of volume since Brooklyn’s stars will still be out. Additionally, Curry still has an incredibly cheap salary in DFS, so plugging him into your lineup is low-risk, high-reward.
