BYU vs. Notre Dame Betting Odds & Predictions (10/8/2022)

Week six of College Football features a matchup of two independent programs as the BYU Cougars and Notre Dame Fighting Irish face off.  This matchup will be played at a neutral site in Las Vegas, NV at Allegiant Stadium, as this game is part of Notre Dame’s annual Shamrock Series.  With no team gaining home field advantage, it will leave it all up to the talent as these two squads match up in this game.  Notre Dame stumbled out of the gate to a rocky 0-2 start as well as losing starting QB Tyler Buchner.  The Irish have been able to find a groove led by their defense and have won two straight against Cal and North Carolina.  Drew Pyne is getting used to the starting job as well and threw for three TDs against the Tar Heels.  Now after a bye week, it’ll be a big game to keep their momentum going in their Shamrock Series game.

BYU has been off to a very good start getting a win against a ranked Baylor team at home as well as big wins against Utah State and Wyoming.  Their offense has looked extremely well scoring north of 30 in their past two games.  Their only loss is to a strong pac-12 Oregon team.  They enter this game ranked 16th in the country.  Let’s break into this games’ picks and predictions.

BYU Vs. Notre Dame Odds

Despite being ranked and having a better record, BYU is entering this game as underdogs against the Irish.  Notre Dame is currently moneyline favorites at -178 favorites and a spread line of -3.5 points.  This is a bit surprising as BYU did beat Baylor who similarly had a strong defense but mediocre offense, but they did that on BYU’s home turf.

This game will surely be neutral when it comes to fandom, plus Notre Dame’s recent revival in their past couple games could bring Notre Dame back to playing as expected prior to the season when they were preseason ranked No. 5.  Drew Pyne will have to play similarly like he did against North Carolina when they won 45-32 to keep Notre Dame the favorite to keep up with a very tough BYU offense.

The over/under line is currently being placed at 51 total of points.  That point total makes sense as both of these teams have had high scoring games so far this season.  Notre Dame’s game total has only gone over 50 against North Carolina who is a big offensive team but has been close.  All of BYU’s games have gone over 50 except for their double OT game against Baylor.

BYU Vs. Notre Dame Prediction & Pick

My pick: Notre Dame -3.5 (-110)

While my head says that BYU would be the smart bet to cover with how well their offense has played and Notre Dame’s early struggles, my gut is telling me Notre Dame will get back to normalcy and get this win to get a three win streak going and get back into Fighting Irish midseason fashion.  Drew Pyne has been playing well with receivers Logan Diggs and Lorenzo Styles and TE Michael Mayer has played up to all-american form when he gets targeted with 3 TDs on the year.  RBs Audric Estime and Chris Tyree have been a good tandem as well with both getting touchdowns in their last games.  I think Notre Dame’s early offensive struggles won’t be a huge issue against BYU as the Cougar defense has let up 20 or more points per game.  Another main reason I like Notre Dame in this game is the fact that it is the Shamrock Series.  Notre Dame has not lost a Shamrock Series game since it became a yearly tradition in 2009.

The over could also be a play as well going over 51 points.  Both of these teams showed their ability to have high-scoring games.  BYU games have certainly shown their ability to be high scoring and I think Notre Dame’s offense will play up to par to match them in points and win.

Notre Dame vs BYU Key Matchups

How will Jaren Hall fare against this rising Notre Dame defense? Check out the key matchups for Notre Dame vs BYU below.

Jaren Hall Vs. Notre Dame Defense

The matchup to watch for will be BYU QB Jaren Hall against the Notre Dame defense.  Jaren Hall has been electric through five games so far with 12 passing TDs and only one INTs.  The Irish defense has shown their ability to stop teams from scoring when needed.  They kept one of the most talented offenses in the county in the Ohio State Buckeyes to only 21 points.  They have 13 sacks on the season as well.  If they play like they have, coming up in big games when they need to, they should be able to slow down the Cougar offense.
