Charlotte Hornets at Los Angeles Clippers Preview

The Charlotte Hornets will be playing their second consecutive game in Staples Center tonight as they play the second of a back-to-back against the Los Angeles Clippers after suffering a loss against the Lakers last night.

Both teams are coming off losses, with the Clippers at 2-1 on the season and the Hornets at 1-2. If the Hornets were looking for refuge against a different team in LA tonight, they won’t get that in the Clippers and will likely be heavy underdogs against the Kawhi Leonard-led Clippers.

Hornets Analysis

Charlotte HornetsThe Charlotte Hornets stayed right with the Lakers for three quarters on Sunday night, but when the fourth quarter came around, the Los Angeles went on a run. Their stifling defense limited the Hornets to 21 points and the Hornets were unable to answer back as LeBron James took over and the Lakers scored 33.

They’ll face another tough defensive team tonight in the Clippers, so they’ll need to find ways to score and not get down early.

Cody Zeller has had a solid start to the season. Although he had to miss a game against Minnesota and had to leave last night’s game, receiving stitches, he is averaging 17 points and 13 rebounds and has drawn the praises of head coach James Borrego.

“Cody plays the right way, he plays hard,” Borrego said. “Great teammate and he’s producing right now. We need him to produce on both ends of the floor. I think he’ll help us a tremendous amount this season.”

Zeller is one of few veterans on the team, and the Hornets will look to him for leadership on this west coast road trip.

Clippers Analysis

Los Angeles ClippersThe Clippers looked like world betters early in the season, but they came back to earth in a 130-122 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Saturday night.

While the Clippers haven’t had much trouble scoring and have the luxury of the highest-scoring second unit, three starters combined for just 18 points, and they’ll need more from those players tonight.

“Even if we had won the game, we had no business winning the game tonight,” Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. “They just played so much harder. They were so much more committed to what they were doing in every aspect. I just thought they were better. They just really deserved to win the game.”

Montrezl Harrell and Lou Williams have been great off the bench, and often, Mo Harkless and JaMychal Green contribute to the second unit scoring.

The Clippers are still without Paul George, but Kawhi Leonard has kept the team afloat. He finished with 27 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds, once again displaying his improved passing ability.

Key Player Matchups

Kawhi Leonard vs. Miles Bridges

To make this simple, Kawhi Leonard has an edge against pretty much any other forward in the NBA, so Bridges has his work cut out for him, but he had a nice performance against LeBron James, and he’ll look to do the same against Leonard tonight.

Patrick Beverley vs. Terry Rozier

Beverley loves taking on young point guards and giving them their comeuppance so he’ll probably look to lock down Rozier. Rozier has not quite hit the marks that may have been expected when the was signed to a three-year $58 million contract, but it’s still very early in the season and this is a completely new team and system for him. His performance in a losing effort against the Lakers is definitely an encouraging sign.

Daily Fantasy

Kawhi Leonard is probably the only player that can be considered a stud in today’s game. Leonard is available for $9.2k on Fan Duel and is projected for 39.75 points.

If you’re looking for values to round out your fantasy lineup, look no further than Montrezl Harrell on the Clippers. He is available for $6.4k and is slated for 34.86 fantasy points. He’s always been good for rebounds and hustle points, but he’s been scoring with a 21 ppg average thus far. For the Hornets, look for Miles Bridges at 24.1 points for $6.3k.
