Chicago Bears Analysis

Chicago Bears
The Chicago Bears are 8-7 on the season after having beaten the Jacksonville Jaguars last game 41-17 on the road. With a win versus the Green Bay Packers next weekend, they would clinch a playoff spot in the NFC playoffs. However, if the Cardinals lose to the Rams on Sunday, the Bears would still make the playoffs from a tie-breaker they have locked with the Arizona Cardinals.

Last week, Mitch Trubisky played well again for the Bears. He threw for 265 yards and two touchdowns to Jimmy Graham. He also ran for a touchdown in the second half to continue the offensive dominance in the game against the Jaguars. Mitch’s only tough image came when he threw a forced pass into the endzone that ended in a Joe Schobert interception. The Packers have a well run passing defense that is ranked in the top ten for the lowest amount of passing yards, passing touchdowns, and completion percentage allowed to opponents this season.

David Montgomery is keeping his hot streak alive in the back half of this season. Last week, Montgomery ran the ball 23 times for 95 yards and had another rushing touchdown. He also caught the ball three times for 26 yards in the backfield. Montgomery has been the X-factor for the Bears offense that has allowed their play-action to thrive. The Packers’ weakest link in their defense is certainly defending the run. They allow 4.6 yards per attempt to opposing running backs, which ranks 25th in the NFL. Montgomery should be a big part of their offense next week.

The Bears defense has struggled after being the point of attack at the beginning of the year for them. However, last week they kept the Jaguars to just 17 points in the game. Roquan Smith showed the reasons he should not have been snubbed from the Pro Bowl and put up two interceptions and eight total tackles in the game. The Bears’ secondary has looked rough without Jaylon Johnson and Buster Skrine on the field, so if they can get those two players healthy, they could have a good shot at winning this one.

Green Bay Packers Analysis

Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers improved their record to 12-3 on Sunday night after beating up on the Tennessee Titans at home in the snow. They won 40-14 with an excellent performance from their defense and Aaron Rodgers. The Packers are still in danger of losing their first-round bye to the Seattle Seahawks or the New Orleans Saints, so expect them to be trying in this one.

Aaron Rodgers made the Titans’ defense look silly in this one by throwing for 231 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. Devante Adams and Rodgers connected 11 times for 142 yards and three of his four touchdowns in this one. Rodgers now is the favorite to win the MVP title over Patrick Mahomes, and it certainly showed in this game. The Bears, however, do provide a tough challenge on defense. They allow the eighth-lowest completion percentage to opposing quarterbacks and the 12th least amount of passing yards per game.

A.J Dillon, the rookie second-round draft pick out of Boston College, had himself quite a night on Sunday against the Titans’ weak rushing defense. He rushed the ball 21 times for 124 yards and put up two touchdowns against them. Aaron Jones also ran the ball 10 times for 94 yards in the game. The Packers seem to have found an extra weapon in the run game to help them out through the rest of the season. The Bears have struggled in some games to defend the run, but overall they have allowed the second least amount of rushing touchdowns per game and just 4.1 yards per attempt to opponents.

The Packers’ defense has kept their opponents to under 20 points in three of their last four games. This season, they have allowed just 23.5 points per game and the seventh least amount of yards per game to their opponents. Last time against the Bears, they kept them to just 25 points in the game and allowed their offense to have the ball for nearly 38 minutes in the game.

The Green Bay Packers, in short, hardly lose to the Bears when Aaron Rodgers is trying. If the Packers had already clinched this game, I would select the Bears to come out with the win. However, considering Rodgers wants to win a Super Bowl before he retires, this bye week would do him justice going into the playoffs. I would take the Packers money line and spread.

The Bears and the Packers combine for an even 15-15 record against the over/under. However, considering that the Packers are one of three teams to average 30+ points per game and the Bears have put up 30+ points per game in each of their last four games, I would take the over for this one.

Love/Hate Fantasy Picks

Love

David Montgomery has been on the hottest streak of his life in football. He has not seen a game under 20 fantasy points since week 9 of this season. Last week, he put up 20.1 fantasy points against the Jacksonville Jaguars, which is the lowest of his streak in the past five weeks. The Packers have allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to running backs this season in fantasy, and I would anticipate that the Bears are going to maximize his usage in this game.

Hate

A.J Dillon blew up last game for 25.9 fantasy points and the most carries he has seen this season with 21 carries. However, he has averaged 4.0 fantasy points per game this season and has hardly been used in the Packers’ offense. His split carries with Aaron Jones is concerning, and his matchup against the Bears defense is not appealing. I would not rely on him to get your fantasy team through a championship next weekend.

Post
I have played football, baseball, hockey, golf, and basketball separately when I was young. Now I run cross country and track for DePaul University. My favorite part about sport is the mental strength. I am a big fan of all of the Chicago sports teams that don’t end in “Cubs.”
