Chicago Cubs vs. Cincinnati Reds, 5/16/19 6:40 PM ET Great American Ballpark, Cincinnati, Ohio, TV: Cincinnati (FS-O), Chicago (NBCSCH) – Radio: Cincinnati (WLW 700, Reds Radio Network), Chicago (670 The Score)
After a 10 inning contest last night, the Reds and Cubs are set to matchup for the series finale tonight. The Cubs are sending Jose Quintana to the mound, who’s 2019 has proved he was well worth acquiring. Ace Luis Castillo takes the mound for the Reds.
Taking last night’s game in walk-off fashion, the Reds look to steal the series from the Cubs. If ever there was a time for the Reds to pull this off, it would be with Castillo on the mound at home. Castillo, 4-1 with a 1.76 ERA, has certainly lived up to expectations in 2019.
Quintana has pleasantly surprised the Cubs so far this season. He sits at 4-2 with a 3.50 ERA, although one bad start where he gave up 8 runs early on against the Brewers is mostly responsible for the inflated average. If the Cubs can pull off this victory, it will be 9 straight series wins for the club.
Both teams have been hitting the ball exceptionally lately, so expect to see each team put up 4+ runs.
Cubs Starting Lineup
Where do the Cubs stand right now? Well for starters, way better than PECOTA had anticipated. The team has been playing incredible baseball lately, finally living up to expectations on the offensive side most notably with Jason Heyward finally pulling his weight with 32 hits and 6 home runs on the season.
Starting pitching for the team has been a dream thus far. They’re 3rd in the MLB with a 3.44 ERA. The bullpen has continued to be a point of contention, though, as it seems to be the only thing holding back this great baseball team from being elite. Carl Edwards Jr., who’s had a rough 2019 so far, blew last night’s game.
The Cubs offense matches up well against Castillo. Almora, Bryant, Contreras, and Descalso all have above a .300 average against the right hander. The main concern the Cubs face against Castillo is their susceptibility to strikeouts especially against changeup pitchers. In Castillo’s last start, he used the changeup 40 times of his 103 pitches, with 15 swing and misses, recording 9 of his 11 strikeouts on the pitch.
Reds Starting Lineup
The Reds currently occupy last place in the NL Central, and they haven’t exactly looked like they’re going to pull out of it anytime soon. Despite last night’s walk-off win, the club is 5-5 in their last 10 and with a 19-24 record, currently 7.5 games out of first place in the division.
Although he’s looked slightly better in recent games, Puig hasn’t exactly lived up to what the Reds hoped he would be thus far. 2 home runs with a .292 over the last 7 games is promising, but it isn’t enough to convince that he’s worth the 9.7 million the Reds are paying him this year.
Barnhart and Votto historically match up well against Quintana, but the rest of the lineup either hasn’t faced him or hasn’t put up any notable numbers against the left-hander. The Reds likely have a good chance of putting up most of their runs when the Cubs’ less than spectacular bullpen comes into the game.
Cubs vs Reds Betting Odds
Steal alert! With current ML odds at Cubs +110 Reds -120, I’d say it’s a great game to grab an edge. Even though Castillo has put up great numbers on the season, I just don’t see the Cubs taking the potential to win 9 straight series lightly. My money’s on the Cubs to take the game on the road.
