Matchup Preview
The Cubs will be hosted by the Rockies tonight at 8:40 PM ET. The two teams matched up just last week, the Cubs taking the series two games to one. It’ll be Yu Darvish for the Cubs tonight and German Marquez for the Rockies. The two pitchers matched up last week in a 9-8 Cubs victory and are set for a rematch tonight.
Darvish gave up 3 runs (2 earned) to the Rockies last Wednesday through 5 1/3. He got a no-decision on the day. Darvish is 2-1 with an ERA of 3.64 on the road this year (through 6 starts). Over the course of his career, Darvish is 0-3 against the Rockies in 4 games with an ERA of 8.20.
Marquez gave up a career-high 8 runs against the Cubs just last week when he matched up against Darvish at Wrigley. On the season, he’s 6-3 with an ERA of 4.07 and 88 Ks. His 88 strikeouts put him at ninth in the NL in the strikeout category.

Rockies Analysis
The Rockies have lost their last two series against the Mets and Cubs. Despite this, their 33-31 record is still something for Rockies fans to be happy with. It’s looking like it’ll be another wild-card year for the Rockies because of the Dodgers (they’re currently 11 games back), if they do end up making the playoffs, that is.
Arenado had a rough last week, recording just 4 hits through 22 ABs for an average of .182. Story was better, hitting, 250 through the week, but Dahl and Murphy were carrying the Rockies through the week hitting .320 and .300, respectively. Through 10 ABs, Arenado is hitting .400 with 1 HR against Darvish. Dahl is hitting .333 off the right-hander, and Story is 1 home-run off of him.
Posting a 6-3 record on the year, Marquez is boasting an impressive WAR of 2.7. Despite having a relatively high ERA of 4.07, he’s been an effective pitcher for the Rockies. His 88 strikeouts are impressive and the ability to fan hitters could play a big role in the tonight’s game against strikeout-prone Cubs. His start against the Cubs last week where he gave up 8 runs isn’t very reassuring, though.

Cubs Analysis
Coming off sweeping the Cardinals at home, the Cubs will look to roll some of that momentum over into game 1 of this 3 game series against the Rockies. They’re currently tied with the Brewers at the top of the NL Central, so a win today would put them half a game ahead because the Brewers don’t play today. The Cubs’ recent signing of Kimbrel has made news across the league, and the club is eagerly awaiting his arrival after he gets everything ironed out in AAA.
The Cubs have hit Marquez very well. Bote went 4-4 last week against him, recording 7 RBIs. Rizzo is hitting .400 with 1 RBI against the right-hander. In 8 ABs, Schwarber has recorded 4 hits off him. Marquez gave up 7 total hits and 8 runs against the Cubs at Wrigley last week.
Darvish continues to be quite unpredictable. He looked adequate in his last start against the Rockies (3 hits, 3 runs, 5.1 innings), but the Cubs would certainly like to see more lock-down stuff from him. He gave up 3 walks last week to add to his now massive total of 44 on the season.
Rockies vs Cubs Betting Odds
The line is currently set at Cubs +127 Rockies -137 after opening at Cubs +123 Rockies -133. The line is moving to favor the Rockies more, which I think is great because it gives you a better value to bet the Cubs who will win this game. Their offensive production and relatively good bullpen were enough to win the last 3 games against the Cardinals, and I don’t see why they wouldn’t be able to take game one from Colorado/ Even if Darvish doesn’t have a great start, Joe Maddon has proved he has no problem taking him out of the game early. The over/under is currently set at a whopping 11, and if you can place your bet before this number changes, I’d highly recommend the under simply because of the value.
