Courtland Sutton Fantasy Football Outlook & Value 2019

Ranking-WR37, ADP-10.02, Auction Value($200)-$12, Team-Den, BYE-10

Overlooked last season was Courtland Sutton’s encouraging rookie year. Under less than ideal circumstances, Sutton still put up over 700 yards and 4 touchdowns for the Denver Broncos. One person that did take note of Sutton however, was former Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne, who had him as one of the most likely young receivers to break out.

Sutton will definitely get the chance next season, as he looks to take the baton from Emmanuel Sanders and establish himself as the Broncos’ number one receiver. A lot of things are different this season, as they’ve switched both their head coach and quarterback. Whether Joe Flacco and Vic Fangio can prove to be upgrades over their predecessors remains to be seen however.

Upside

Sutton was an instant contributor for the Broncos, and he pairs well with Emmanuel Sanders. Only 23, improvement is likely, and with an bigger role, an increase in production should be coming as well. Joe Flacco hasn’t had the best couple seasons recently, but a change of scenery could revitalize him. If Flacco doesn’t work out however, the Broncos have a promising young quarterback in Drew Lock to fill in his shoes. Fangio isn’t known as an offensive mastermind, but it’s hard to see him being as uncreative as Vance Joseph was offensively. It’s possible he brought along some of the gadget plays the Bears utilized to Denver. If the quarterback situation exceeds expectations and Fangio shows that he can be a better play caller than Joseph, Sutton could have a 1000 yard season with 7 touchdowns.

Floor

Unfortunately for Flacco and the Broncos, he hasn’t been elite or even good for many years. At 34 years of age, it’s hard to foresee a career resurgence. Drew Lock has potential, but he’s still a rookie in the end. While Fangio has proven himself to be a great defensive minded coach, he hasn’t had any meaningful experience coaching modern offenses. This could make his transition to head coach harder than expected. There are a lot of uncertainties, and that means Sutton’s production is uncertain for this season. If Flacco continues his downward spiral and Lock isn’t ready enough to become a starter, Sutton could see himself stagnate. That would mean something along the lines of 600 yards and 4 touchdowns.

What to Expect

Denver BroncosSutton is currently rated as the 37th best receiver and has an auction value of $12. He also has an average draft position in the 10th round. Unfortunately, for a player who’s unlikely to be no more than a WR3 or flex receiver, this is too expensive. When considering that there are players like Chris Godwin and Tyler Lockett available for the same price, paying this much for Sutton would seem to be a poor decision.

Unfortunately for Sutton, he isn’t in the best of situations. Although he’ll likely get to be the WR1 for the Broncos, that’ll mean he’ll have to deal with defensive attention he’s never experienced before. When coupled with the fact that less than ideal quarterbacks will likely be throwing him the ball, Sutton may have a difficult time breaking out, no matter how talented he is. I personally believe that Flacco will bust, though I think Drew Lock will be better than people expect. A 800 yard 5 touchdown season is likely for Sutton.
