Dallas Mavericks vs. San Antonio Spurs 01/16/19: Starting Lineups, Matchup Breakdown, Odds, Daily Fantasy, Betting
Dallas Mavericks vs. San Antonio Spurs Preview
In a Southwest Division battle tonight, the Dallas Mavericks (20-23) host the San Antonio Spurs (25-20) in the latest matchup of the rival franchises.
Both teams enter tonight’s game on losses and would love to pick up a win over their rival. Dallas lost their last game and has won just four of their last 10 games. The Spurs, who had been on quite the run, seem to have taken a few steps back lately. They have lost their last two and have won six of their last 10 games.
The Mavs and Spurs last played on October 29, with the Spurs winning the first game of the 2018-19 regular season series 113-108 in overtime. DeMar DeRozan led his new franchise with 34 points and nine assists, while San Antonio got their first look at just how good rookie Luka Doncic is as he put up 31 points.

Mavericks Analysis
The Dallas Mavericks have played well at the American Airlines Center this season with a 16-5 home record, and they’ll hope to continue that trend tonight.
The Golden State Warriors halted Dallas’ two-game win streak with a 119-114 win on Sunday. The Mavs could not solve the puzzle that is long-range bomber Stephen Curry, who scored 48 points against them.
The Mavericks have shifted their lineups lately, but the one constant has been rookie Luka Doncic. While he struggled with his shot against Golden State, he still led the Mavs with 26 points, six rebounds, and five assists.
At one point, it looked like the Mavs had a very promising young backcourt of Doncic and Dennis Smith Jr., but it doesn’t appear Smith is long for Dallas. Several reports have surfaced about trade rumors and some believe Smith has become disgruntled. A Doncic/Smith backcourt tandem really made it seem like the Mavs were in a position for some success for years to come, but that has all unraveled now and there are more question marks now than ever, especially as the franchise’s greatest player is playing limited minutes in his final season.

Spurs Analysis
Recently all the talk surrounding the San Antonio Spurs was about the team turning the corner. But they have now lost three of their last four as they hang onto a low playoff seed in the West.
Following up a five-game streak with a 1-3 record where that one win came in overtime has also seemed to coincide with DeMar DeRozan struggling on offense. It took LaMarcus scoring 54 points to escape in double OT, but Aldridge is no James Harden and the Spurs can’t lean on him that heavily.
While on the surface, most of DeRozan’s numbers look fine, when you dig deeper, you’ll notice that he is shooting right around the 35 percent mark from the field in the last four games, and he hasn’t attempted a three-pointer in 2019, so those aren’t affecting his numbers. He’s still been the Spurs’ best playmaker and is among rebound leaders for the team, but the Spurs desperately need DeRozan to start finding range on his mid-range shots again.
Aldridge and Derrick White have been consistent lately, but they’ll need more from DeRozan offensively, and they should have Rudy Gay back to help in that department as well.
