Dallas Mavericks vs. Phoenix Suns Matchup Preview (11/19/21)

For the second time in three days, the Dallas Mavericks (9-5) will be on the road facing the Phoenix Suns (11-3) at the Footprint Center. On Wednesday, Phoenix snuck away with a seven-point victory at home in the first matchup to win its tenth straight game. After a rocky start, Phoenix has rattled off win after win after the organizational chaos began to subside. Now, the Suns look as good as they ever have, and it seems they are poised for another incredible season and subsequent playoff run. Devin Booker is not averaging as many points as in past seasons, but this has led to a more well-distributed offensive attack, which teams are struggling to stop. They have eight players averaging double-digits, or near double-digits, which is incredibly impressive. Phoenix will be trying to win its 11th straight game and could end up carrying its streak all the way to the end of November. Meanwhile, the Mavericks have won five of their past seven games but have only won two of their past four. That can be partly attributed to missing Luka Doncic last game; however, there are still other factors. If Dallas wants to win on the road in its second straight game against the Phoenix Suns, it will need to shoot very well. The Mavericks could not put up 100 points against Phoenix on Wednesday but will need to do so if they want to win. For the Suns to get a second-straight home win over the Mavericks, they will need to keep Kristaps Porzingis and Jalen Brunson from having massive games and force their role players to beat them.

Dallas Mavericks vs. Phoenix Suns Betting Odds

While the odds are not available yet for this game, we will draw a pretty accurate estimate based on the fact that these two teams played on Wednesday in the same environment and players available. The table above will update, though, once they are out, and you will be able to find the best odds available from all of the major sportsbooks.

Dallas played Phoenix close on Wednesday, only losing by seven points. Still, the Suns are a much better team than the Mavericks, especially without Luka Doncic, one of the biggest superstars in the NBA. The Suns have far too many weapons, and I don’t see a scenario where the Mavs can hold them to 105 points again. Phoenix should easily win this game, and I would lean towards the Suns against the spread, even though they couldn’t cover on Wednesday.

Mavs vs Suns Game Picks Video

Dallas Mavericks Starting Lineup

PG: Jalen Brunson
SG: Tim Hardaway Jr.
SF: Dorian Finney-Smith
PF: Kristaps Porzingis
C: Dwight Powell

Dallas Mavericks Analysis

Dallas can’t seem to catch a break. First, the Mavericks had Kristaps Porzingis not playing well due to a lingering back injury and then missing some time as well. Now, Porzingis has returned and is playing as well as he has played in years, and Luka suffered an ankle injury. Luckily, Luka’s injury is not significant, but it still does not help the Mavericks, especially since Doncic has had a history of ankle injuries. Dallas desperately needs Doncic and Porzingis on the floor and playing great basketball to compete in the jam-packed Western Conference. Still, for this game, it will just have to get terrific performances from everyone that is not named Luka Doncic.

Phoenix Suns Starting Lineup

PG: Chris Paul
SG: Devin Booker
SF: Mikal Bridges
PF: Jae Crowder
C: Deandre Ayton

Phoenix Suns Analysis

The Phoenix Suns have not lost a basketball game since October 27th and may not lose one again until late November, when they face two of the other best teams in the NBA: the Brooklyn Nets and Golden State Warriors. Phoenix had a rough start to this season, and it looked like perhaps the Suns were a “one-season wonder.” However, that clearly could not have been farther from the truth as they have made themselves one of the most dangerous teams in the NBA, along with the Golden State Warriors. Currently, Phoenix ranks in the top ten in virtually every offensive category and has still not even hit its ceiling.

Dallas Mavericks vs. Phoenix Suns Daily Fantasy Picks

It is still beyond me why Jalen Brunson does not start consistently for the Dallas Mavericks. In an era of positionless basketball, Brunson and Doncic could easily co-exist. Perhaps the Mavs are worried about Brunson’s impact off the ball since Doncic has such a heavy usage; however, it seems ridiculous not to try it. When Brunson has started for the Mavs, which has been a total of three games in the 2021-22 season, he has put up some huge numbers averaging 24.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, and five assists per game. For DFS, if Brunson is ever expected to start for the Mavericks, you absolutely should play him, no matter the matchup for a particular game.

Any time Luka is out, the two players you have to stick in your lineup are Brunson and Porzingis. Normally, I like to put one player from each team on this list; however, based on how terrific Kristaps Porzingis has been since returning from his lingering back injury, I think it is important to highlight him once again. Since returning, Porzingis is averaging 22.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.3 blocks, and just shy of one steal per game on unbelievable splits for a 7-foot-3 power forward. His splits through those six games are 48.1/39.5/91.7, which is better than virtually every guard in the NBA that is not named Curry. His value will always be high, regardless of whether Doncic plays or not, but when he does not play, it is even that much more important to grab him.
