Detroit Pistons vs New York Knicks Preview (10/21/22): Prediction, Starting Lineups, Odds
Contents
The youthful Detroit Pistons will match up with the emerging New York Knicks in an Eastern Conference bout. In this article, I cover my favorite betting picks and predictions for this game, as well as applicable injury news, current odds, and projected starting lineups. Check it all out below!
Detroit Pistons Vs. New York Knicks Betting Odds
The Detroit Pistons are 6.5-point road dogs against the New York Knicks in Madison Square Garden. Last season, the Pistons lost all three matchups with the New York Knicks and only would have covered this number in one of the games. Currently, the point total sits at 217.5; this number was not eclipsed in any of the three matchups between these two teams last season.
Detroit Pistons Vs. New York Knicks Prediction
New York looked pretty impressive in its first game on the road against the Memphis Grizzlies. The Knicks stormed back after being down 19 points halfway through the third quarter and even took the lead at one point.
A few areas of concern for the Knicks heading into this season was their offense, point guard play, and three-point shooting; they were covered well in the first game with Jalen Brunson’s nine assists and zero turnover game, Cam Reddish’s shooting from deep, and Julius Randle’s versatility.
Memphis was down a few key players, such as Ziaire Williams, Jaren Jackson Jr, and Dillon Brooks, but still got great performances from role players like John Konchar and Santi Aldama. Still, New York put a scare into last year’s No. 2 seed in the Western Conference.
Detroit played its first game against the Orlando Magic and held them off in the fourth quarter to win by four points at home. The Pistons got some great debuts from their rookies, including Jaden Ivey’s 19 points and Jalen Duren’s double-double! There will be some growing pains for Detroit, but also bright moments.
In this matchup, I love the New York Knicks to blow the Pistons out at home. In three matchups last season, New York held the Pistons to fewer than 93 points and 39% shooting from the field! Count on the Knicks to cover the spread at home.
Betting Trends
- Detroit was 22-18-1 last season ATS on the road
- New York was 16-25 last season ATS at home
- In all three games last season, the 217.5 point total would have gone under
Key Matchups
There will be plenty of key matchups in this Eastern Conference matchup between the Detroit Pistons and New York Knicks. A few of the matchups that I’ll be highlighting are Jalen Brunson versus Cade Cunningham and Pistons’ offense versus the Knicks’ defense!
Jalen Brunson vs. Cade Cunningham
Jalen Brunson and Cade Cunningham have only matched up in one game; it was last April, right before the start of the NBA Playoffs. Cade Cunningham nearly had a triple-double, scoring 25 points, bringing down seven rebounds, and dishing out nine assists. Brunson had a solid line of 24/6/3, too. This game will be a battle of the backcourt, and whichever team gets better guard play should win this game.
Detroit Pistons’ Offense vs. New York Knicks’ Defense
The Detroit Pistons look a little bit different this year than last; they have rookies Jalen Duren and Jaden Ivey in the rotation and also brought in Bojan Bogdanovic. Still, there will be moments when this team struggles due to its youth and inexperience.
In three games last year, the Pistons finished with 91 points, 85 points, and 102 points, respectively. Detroit struggled a substantial amount on that end of the floor against the Knicks, shooting just above 39% from the field over the course of three games.
