Golden State Warriors at Minnesota Timberwolves Preview

The Golden State Warriors are on the road again tonight for their second game of a back-to-back set against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Both teams could use a win tonight after dropping games recently.

Golden State is currently tied for first place in the Western Conference after losing to the San Antonio Spurs last night. They are 47-22 on the season and are 5-5 in their last 10 games. Although not official yet, it’s pretty safe to say that the Minnesota Timberwolves will not be in the postseason. They are 32-38 and are 10th in the West. The Wolves have lost their last three games and are 3-7 in their last 10.

The Warriors and Timberwolves last faced off on December 10, with the Warriors taking the win 116-108. Stephen Curry led the Warriors with 38 points. Karl-Anthony Towns had 31 points and 11 assists in the loss for Minnesota.

Warriors Analysis

Golden State WarriorsThe Golden State Warriors started their four-game road trip with two consecutive wins over some of the top Western Conference teams that they could see in the playoffs, but they couldn’t make it three in a row as they visited San Antonio last night.

The Warriors struggled offensively, especially as two of their best shooters, Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, went cold, shooting a combined 14-of-43 from the field

“We didn’t make shots in the first half, and it was tough to kind of build momentum,” Curry said. “Defensively, we played solid. We just had a couple of breakdowns in crunch time that were able to keep us at a distance. Tough game all the way around. We fought hard the whole time.”

Though he struggled with his shot, aside from a 3/4 court hail mary that fell through as the teams went into halftime, Curry finished with 25 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds. Kevin Durant added 24 points and Thompson had 14.

The Warriors were without DeMarcus Cousins and started Andrew Bogut. Not having another floor spacer in Cousins definitely affected the Warriors as the Spurs were able to close out quickly as the ball was passed around the horn.

Timberwolves Analysis

Minnesota TimberwolvesThe Timberwolves have lost their last three against the Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz and Houston Rockets, and the murderers’ row of playoff teams doesn’t end as they face a tough task in the Golden State Warriors tonight, who will be looking to separate themselves at the top of the Western Conference.

In their 102-117 loss the Rockets on Sunday, they were very much in the game early, but a 43-point scoring burst by the Rockets in the third quarter became too difficult a hole to crawl out of.

Karl-Anthony Towns led Minnesota with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Rookie Josh Okogie, who has been starting for Minnesota, had 21 points in the game. Okogie defended James Harden on Sunday, and he’ll likely be called on to defend Curry tonight.

“He had a great game,” Tyus Jones said. “It’s all a process and a grind of a season and that’s the good thing about having so many games is you get a chance to bounce back and turn things around quickly.”

The Warriors are 6.5 point favorites on the road tonight. They are 23-12 on the road this season and 44-18 as the favorite. Minnesota is 23-10 at home and 11-25 as the underdog.
