Golden State Warriors vs. Minnesota Timberwolves Preview

The Golden State Warriors are back home on Monday night to host the Minnesota Timberwolves, and they’ll be welcoming someone else as forward Draymond Green is expected to make his return.

Last time the Warriors faced Minnesota, it was before the Jimmy Butler trade, and although Minnesota is sitting at .500 currently, they are looking like an improved team, and just as the Warriors are getting their defensive ace back, the Timberwolves are also expected to get Robert Covington back.

The last game was a 17-point win for Golden State as the healthy Warriors, behind Kevin Durant’s 33 points and 13 rebounds, dispatched a Timberwolves team with injuries to both Jeff Teague and Derrick Rose.

Minnesota will be looking to exact revenge tonight in the second meeting, but it won’t be easy with the Warriors’ big four healthy again.

Warriors Analysis

Golden State Warriors

It was a strange sight seeing the Warriors not sitting atop the Western Conference, but with Stephen Curry back in tow, and now Green set to return, I’m not sure you’ll see that for the remainder of the season, as the Warriors took first place back winning six of their last eight games.

The Warriors are coming off a huge win , topping the Milwaukee Bucks 104-95. The Warriors were able to get going early and their defense kept Milwaukee under 100 points for the first time in 24 games.

Aside from Curry, Thompson and Durant playing well recently, Andre Iguodala has made the most of his minutes and was a difference-maker against Milwaukee with 15 points and eight rebounds.

Green seems to be elated to be given the “all clear” for tonight’s game and has already talked about going after the Defensive Player of the Year Award, even after missing the last 11 games.

Timberwolves Analysis

Minnesota Timberwolves

Minnesota is currently 13-13 in a crowded Western Conference. They’ve won six of their last ten games, and seemed to be on a roll until their recent loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.

Damian Lillard scored 28 points on them without Covington and he knocked down a tie-breaking three with just under a minute to go. Having Covington back should help, but his return comes on a night where the Timberwolves will be faced with several tough defensive matchups.

However, there’s no denying that even though Minnesota traded one the league’s premier perimeter defenders, they seem to be better on the defensive end since acquiring Covington, Dario Saric and Jerryd Bayless. They’ve been better at stopping shot attempts in the paint and have defended the fast break far more effectively.

Just exactly how much they’ve improved in that department will be put to the test tonight against the defending NBA champions.
