Golden State Warriors vs Dallas Mavericks Matchup Preview (3/3/22)

The Golden State Warriors (43-19) travel to take on the Dallas Mavericks (37-25) Thursday night. The Warriors are struggling to maintain their blistering pace from earlier in the season. They are 4-6 in their last ten games while having the 15th Offensive Rating and 16th Defensive Rating over that stretch. For a team that features Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins, and a deep bench, being 15th is not good enough. The Warriors are coming off a 129-114 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, but Klay was unable to play. Curry scored 34 points on a 41.6 FG% and 31.2 3PT%. Wiggins chipped in 12 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists,  1 steal, and 2 blocks. Off the bench, Damion Lee scored 15, while Jonathan Kuminga added 13. Unfortunately, Karl-Anthony Towns was too much for Looney to handle. Towns scored 39 points on a 63.6 FG% and 50 3PT% and grabbed 9 rebounds. D’Angelo produced 22 points and 7 rebounds on 47 FG%. Off the bench, Malik Beasley torched the Warriors for 20 points on 6/9 from three. The injury report is full for the Warriors. Klay Thompson, Moses Moody, Nemanja Bjelica, and Andre Iguodala are game time decisions. Draymond Green and James Wiseman are still out.

The balanced Mavericks are rolling to the tune of 8 wins in their last 10 games. Over that span, they are 8th in Offensive Rating and 5th in Defensive Rating. They just beat the Lakers 109-104 in a game that was closer than it should have been. The Mavericks were up 15 points at halftime, but the Lakers outscored the Mavericks by 17 points in the 3rd quarter. The defense started to clamp the Lakers and only allowed 17 points throughout the entire 4th quarter. Luka Doncic’s shooting was off, but he still managed 25 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. Jalen Brunson scored 22 points on 9/15 from the field and 4/6 from deep. Off the bench, new addition Spencer Dinwiddie added 14 points and 9 assists. Against the Warriors, Trey Burke and Frank Ntilikina are game time decisions. Tim Hardaway Jr, Marquese Chriss, and Theo Pinson are out due to injury.

Golden State Warriors vs Dallas Mavericks Betting Odds

The Mavericks lead the season series 2-1 with the most recent game being a 107-101 Mavericks win on Sunday. Luka produced 34 points and 11 rebounds on 47.6 FG%. Dinwiddie played the best game of his short Mavericks career at 24 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists on 71.4 FG%. Curry had a double-double (27 points, 10 assists), but the Warriors couldn’t hold their lead. They entered the 4th quarter up 14 points, but the Warriors were outscored 33-13 in the final quarter.  In the final matchup of the season, I like the Mavericks to win by 5-7 points. The Mavericks bring tremendous momentum and have played excellent on both sides of the ball. The Warriors, meanwhile, have been mediocre and generally playing sloppy basketball. Plus, Klay Thompson’s status is up in the air. If Klay cannot go, the Warriors will lose a key weapon who could help break this stiff Mavericks defense. I do not expect this game to be a high scoring one, as both defenses are solid. The Warriors have also struggled to score the ball recently.

Golden State Warriors Starting Lineup

PG: Stephen Curry
SG: Klay Thompson
SF: Gary Payton II
PF: Andrew Wiggins
C: Kevon Looney

Golden State Warriors Analysis

The Warriors must get other players going offensively besides Curry. With Klay questionable, the Warriors need Andrew Wiggins, Jordan Poole, and Jonathan Kuminga to efficiently score. Wiggins is an elite spot up shooter, but he can also run the pick and roll in spurts. If he is dedicated to becoming a secondary ball handler, Curry would have less offensive responsibility and pressure to create for others. Curry is also a lethal off-ball player who navigates screens with ease. Curry is one of the best spot up shooters in the game, but he doesn’t get much opportunity to use this because of his shot creation duties.

Off the bench, Jordan Poole and Jonathan Kuminga’s production is vital to the team’s success in this matchup. Poole is averaging 16.0 PPG and 3.5 APG, while Kuminga is averaging 8.3 PPG on 50.3 FG%. The Warriors need Poole to match Dinwiddie’s scoring production and orchestrate the offense. He’s been efficient running the pick and roll, but he can also catch and shoot from three. Kuminga has been heating up because the Warriors are trusting him more. He is averaging 14.6 PPG on 55.8 FG% in his last 11 games. Kuminga’s rare athleticism will be a huge asset against a Mavericks bench frontcourt that lacks explosive athletes.

Dallas Mavericks Starting Lineup

PG: Luka Doncic
SG: Jalen Brunson
SF: Reggie Bullock
PF: Dorian Finney-Smith
C: Dwight Powell

Dallas Mavericks Analysis

The Mavericks just need to continue their game plan: compete on defense and give the ball to Luka on offense. In his last ten games, Luka is averaging 33.2 PPG, 10.5 RPG, and 8.3 APG on 45 FG% and 39.3 3PT%. With plenty of spot up shooters available, defenses have a serious dilemma. Do they stop Doncic from driving, or lock down the perimeter shooters? Dorian Finney-Smith (37.5 3PT%), Jalen Brunson (37.8 3PT%), and Reggie Bullock (36.3 3PT%) give Luka the space he needs to create off the dribble. If the Mavericks want, they can even run a 5-out offense with Maxi Kleber (36 3PT%) at center.

Jalen Brunson is an excellent pick and roll ball handler who can exploit his defender off the dribble. He is in line for a huge pay day this summer when he enters free agency because of his seamless fit into any franchise. Brunson is comfortable playing off-ball, but he can take initiative when the team needs him. The Mavericks also have Spencer Dinwiddie to run the pick and roll. He burned the Warriors on Sunday, and he figures to get a large role once again.

Golden State Warriors vs Dallas Mavericks Daily Fantasy Picks

I like Doncic, Curry, and Dinwiddie in this final matchup. Luka is a must-play who stuffs the box score in points, rebounds, and assists. Luka is 2nd in usage% and flirts with a triple-double every game. No matter what team the Mavericks are playing, I am picking Luka every time. Curry is the offensive focal point, especially with Klay questionable. Whether he is shooting well or not, Curry is going to launch 15 threes. His high usage and incredible shooting make Curry a great choice. Finally, I expect Dinwiddie to repeat his performance against the Warriors. With Payton II in the starting lineup, the Warriors lack an elite guard defender off the bench. Dinwiddie can drive past Poole and score with ease. The Warriors also lack a rim protector off the bench, so the lane will be clear for Dinwiddie. Look for Dinwiddie to produce 20 points and 5 assists.
