Golden Tate Fantasy Football Outlook & Value 2019

After being traded from the Detroit Lions midseason to the Philadelphia Eagles, Golden Tate landed with the New York Giants in the offseason. Of course there are now plenty of targets up for grabs with the departure of Odell Beckham Jr to Cleveland, but how does Tate fit in with the rest? We also have the corpse of Eli Manning and a rookie quarterback throwing balls in 2019, which is not all that appealing.

Spread out over two teams, Golden Tate saw 113 targets, which was good for 18th in the league. The Lions offense struggled and Tate failed to really do much in Philadelphia over the last third of the season. For the changes Tate went through, the 2018 production wasn’t really a surprise. He has always been a guy you rely to rack up yards and receptions, because you know the touchdowns aren’t his specialty. Tate has only had 13 receiving touchdowns in the last three seasons.

He is another aging wideout with limited years, and his time in New York is going to be interesting with the transitions they are going through as a team. Tate was on pace for over 1,000 yards in Detroit and his touchdowns likely would have hit 5-6. The move to Philly really halted his production. He had just 278 receiving yards since moving to Philly in eight games.

Heading into an age 31 season with the New York Giants in the state that they are in is not a promising look. Tate should see over 100 targets or just about close to it, but how effective will those targets be? Tate isn’t going to be asked to replace OBJ because you simply can’t. He has one of the lower average depth of targets in the league, and he makes more of a living in the opening field. It is rather unlikely that we see Tate return to being a top 20 wideout, but he could flirt with being around a top 30 wideout.

If you are looking for the right place on your team for Tate, it is a flex spot at best, but he is probably better off as a bench filler this season. I think he can flirt with these numbers projected, but the floor is rather low if the Giants offense is worse than we thought.

Draft & Auction Value

Golden Tate should slip in drafts, especially with all of the hesitant reports on the Giants passing game. Tate is goin going to flirt with this WR30 production, and the problem really is that he surrounds himself with so many breakout candidates. Tate is nothing more than a cheap auction pick or late round pick if he slips into the double-digit rounds. There is no way we can suggest anyone to take him higher or over surrounding names. There are very few early 30s wideouts on bad teams that we want to trust for fantasy.
