Matchup Preview

The Astros and Orioles are set to open their series tonight at Minute Maid Park at 8:10 PM ET. The two teams couldn’t be further apart in terms of current standings, the Astros on top of the AL West with a record of 43-21, and the Orioles on the bottom of the East with a record 19-43.

It’ll be Gerrit Cole for the ‘Stros tonight. He’s an even 5-5 on the season with an ERA of 3.94. He’s fanned an impressive 116 in 13 starts on the year, averaging 8.92 Ks per game. He’s 3-2 at Minute Maid on the year and allowing a batting average of just .204.

Gabriel Ynoa gets the nod for the O’s in tonight’s matchup. He’s recently been slotted into a starting role from the pen, and this will mark his third start of the year after making 9 relief appearances for Houston to open the year. Tonight will mark the 0-2 right-handers first time pitching against the Astros in his career. He currently wields an ERA of 5.06.

Astros Analysis

The Astros took their last series against the Mariners 3-1 and will look to grab another series victory against this not-so-tough Orioles team. Currently 9 games ahead of anyone else in the West, there isn’t much to pick apart about the Astros. They’re exactly where they want to be and they’re a good ball club, plain and simple.

Hitting has been one of the Astro’s strongest assets as of late. Chirinos, Brantley, Straw, and Bregman are all hitting above .300 over the last week. In that span, Chirinos has gone yard 4 ties and Bregman has once. The Astros lineup hasn’t seen Ynoa before, but on the year they’re hitting .269 with an OBP of .340 against right-handed pitching.

Gerrit Cole’s last two starts have been satisfactory. He went 6 innings in both, and gave up just two earned runs in each. On the year, he has a 3.94 ERA which could certainly use some improving. He had one start in May where he gave up 8 ERs against the Rangers and another start on May 22nd where he gave up 5 against the White Sox, which are both inflating his ERA.

Orioles Starting Lineup

1. J. Villar , SS (S)
2. T. Mancini , RF (R)
3. D. Smith , LF (L)
4. R. Nunez , 1B (R)
5. R. Ruiz , 3B (L)
6. J. Rickard , CF (R)
7. C. Davis , DH (L)
8. C. Sisco , C (L)
9. H. Alberto , 2B (R)

Orioles Analysis

The Orioles are 3-7 in their last 10, and just 19-43 on the season, making them tied with the Royals as the worst team in baseball. It’s getting to the point in the season where it’s starting to feel like it’s not just a fluke and that’s where they’ll stay.

Despite the O’s not looking very sharp, they still have a few exciting young players. Hander Alberto, the 26-year-old second baseman, is hitting .308 on the year through 169 plate appearances. Trey Mancini, the 27-year-old right fielder is hitting .306 with an OBP of .359 on the year. If the Orioles are going to be contenders anytime soon, there’s no doubt these guys will need to be kept as core players. Not many in the O’s lineup have faces Cole, but Broxton is hitting .273 off him, Villar is hitting .200, and Mancini, Villar, and Wilkerson are all hitting .000.

Ynoa’s last outing against the Giants was impressive, albeit coming as an 8-1 loss for the Orioles. He went 5.0 innings and recorded 4 strikeouts, giving up just 2 earned runs. He gave up 2 earned runs in 4.0 innings in his first start of the season against the Tigers on May 27th.

Astros vs Orioles Betting Odds

The line is currently set extremely one-sided with Houston -340 Baltimore +270 after oping at Houston -330 Baltimore +265. The line movement favors the already favored Astros. I’d love to be a hero and say I recommend taking the Orioles, but I just don’t see that happening, especially when they have Ynoa on the mound. The difference in skill between these two teams that I think this is one of the rare cases in baseball (a usually generally unpredictable game) where a sweep is to be expected. The over/under is currently set at 8 runs. I’d go with the over in today’s game.
