Houston Astros vs. Chicago Cubs 5/27/19: Starting Lineups, Matchup Preview, Betting Odds

Matchup Preview

Old division rivals will rekindle the flame today as the Cubs suit up to take on the Astros at Minute Maid Park at 2:10 PM ET. It’s a first place matchup as both teams currently sit atop their respective divisions. Cole Hamels will take the hill for the Cubs as Gerrit Cole will suit up for the Astros.

In the month of May, Hamels is 1-0 with an ERA of 3.68 through four starts. Over the course of his career, he’s 5-2 with an ERA of 3.65 at Minute Maid Park. Against the Astros as a whole, he’s 8-6 with an ERA of 4.08 ERA. Hamels’ highest winning percentage (.681) of any month in his career comes in May, with the next closest being July & August which are both .622.

Gerrit Cole’s last start wasn’t great, as he let up six runs on seven hits against the White Sox. He’s thrown against the Cubs a lot over the course of his career, boasting a record of 9-3 in 14 games with an ERA of 2.50. He has a higher winning percentage in day games (.628) as opposed to night games (.586).

Cubs Analysis

The Cubs will look to shake off yesterday’s 10-2 loss against the Reds which cemented their second series loss in a row. As they look to turn things around, Gerrit Cole will prove to be a problem. He’s held Baez to a .214 average in 14 at bats as well as Bryant to .238 in 20 at bats.

Yesterday’s slow hitting will have to come simultaneously with the Cubs lineup figuring out how to hit Cole. It will be imperative for Hamels to have a solid start if the Cubs want any chance in this game. On the season, he wields a 3.38 ERA with 60 strikeouts.

Hamels has a history of pitching this Astro’s lineup well, as he’s held Reddick, Marisnick, Gurriel, Kemp, and Correa all to an average of .200 or below. In 2019, he’s pitching better in the daytime (3.15 ERA) vs. nighttime (3.49 ERA).

Astros Starting Lineup

1. Josh Reddick
2. Alex Bregman
3. Michael Brantley
4. Carlos Correa
5. Yuli Gurriel
6. Tony Kemp
7. Robinson Chirinos
8. Tyler White
9. Jake Marisnick

Astros Analysis

Diaz should be on everyone’s radar, as he’s posted an average of .368 and .474 slugging in his last six games. Not far behind him are Brantley and Correa who are both hitting .292 in the last seven days, Correa boasting an OBP of .379.

Coming off yesterday’s 4-1 loss to the Red Sox, the Astros are eager to get back to their winning ways. They’re currently the fourth best team in all of baseball, with a winning percentage of .648.

Gerrit Cole’s five seasons on the Pirates has given him a lot of exposure to the Cubs. Even though he had a rough go in his last outing, expect to see him turn things around against this struggling Cubs offense (a 2.50 career ERA against the Cubs shouldn’t be taken lightly). Schwarber, Heyward, and Descalso are all hitting less than .170 off of him in their careers.

Cubs vs Astros Betting Odds

The line is currently set at Astros -190 Cubs +165. As of now, there hasn’t been much line movement and I’d expect it to stay hovering around this current line. It’s not an exciting prediction, but I’m going with the Astros in this one. Gerrit Cole pitches the Cubs well and he’s proven he wins a higher percentage of day games as opposed to night. As there won’t be a huge payoff taking the money line here, I’d suggest parlaying the game with another if you’re looking for some higher risk/reward. The over/under is currently +8, and I’m going under all the way. Even though I think the Astros will win, Hamels has still been great this month and I foresee it being a pitcher’s game.
