Matchup Preview

The brief two game series between the Astros and Brewers will come to a close tonight at 8:10 PM ET at Minute Maid Park. The Astros took yesterday’s game 10-8 in the opposite of a pitcher’s duel. Peacock got the start for the ‘Stros and gave up 4 earned in 6.1 innings pitched. Peralta gave up 6 runs in just 4.0 innings pitched for the Brewers.

Today it’ll be ace Justin Verlander on the mound for the Astros. On the year, he’s 9-2 with an impressive ERA of 2.31. He’s fanned 110 for an average of 7.86 Ks per start. In 2 games pitched against the Brewers in his career, Verlander is 2-0 with an ERA of 1.08 and has given up just 2 runs in 16.2 innings pitched.

Brandon Woodruff will get the nod for the Brewers tonight. He’s 8-1 on the year with a 3.87 ERA and 90 Ks. Woodruff hasn’t faced the Astros before, but in 4 interleave starts, he’s 1-2 with an ERA of 2.70. The Brewers are 11-2 in games Woodruff has started this year.

Astros Analysis

8-2 in their last 10, the Astros have not been keen on losing series lately, as a win today would make it six straight series wins for the club. They currently sit atop the AL West with a 9 game lead. They boat a 25-9 record at home on the year.

The Astros put up 4 home runs yesterday which makes it 110 on the season for the club, putting them at 4th in the MLB. They’ve hit 83 of those home runs off of right-handed pitching, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few more long balls off of Woodruff today. White and Reddick are both hitting above .300 over the last week.

A distinguished veteran, Verlander has certainly not shown his age this year. His current ERA of 2.31 is the lowest of his 15 year career, granted the season is still young. He allowed 3 runs in 6.1 innings pitched in his last start against the Mariners. Before that he went 8.0 innings giving up just 1 run against Oakland on June 1st.

Brewers Starting Lineup

1. L. Cain , CF (R)
2. C. Yelich , RF (L)
3. M. Moustakas , 2B (L)
4. Y. Grandal , C (S)
5. R. Braun , LF (R)
6. E. Thames , DH (L)
7. T. Shaw , 3B (L)
8. J. Aguilar , 1B (R)
9. O. Arcia , SS (R)

Brewers Analysis

In what has been a battle for first for most of the season, the Brewers are currently .5 games ahed of the Cubs in the NL Central. The Brewers are 6-4 in their last 10. Going down two games in a row here would be tough for the Brewers as the Cubs have just fallen in their last 2 games and the Brewers would’ve been able to pull ahead had they won both against the ‘Stros.

In 36 ABs against Verlander, Lorenzo Cain is hitting .306 with 1 home run and 3 RBIs. Grandal has recorded two hits off the right-hander in 6 ABs. Yelich is currently without a hit in 3 ABs against Verlander, although he’s been heating up recently hitting .565 with an OBP of .593 and 3 HRs in the last week. Moustakas is just behind him hitting .391 with 4 HRs over that same span of time. It’s worth mentioning the Brewers are just ahead of the Astros in HRs on the season with 117, putting them at 3rd in the MLB.

Brandon Woodruff has been a key part of the Brewers’ success on the year. He currently has a WAR of 2.0 and as mentioned before, the Brewers are 11-2 in games he’s started. He’s 2-1 on the road this year through 5 starts with an ERA of 4.03. He’s 6-1 in night games on the season.

Astros vs Brewers Betting Odds

The line is currently set at MIL +115 HOU -135 after opening at MIL +135 HOU -155. The line movement is favoring the Astros bettor, as Verlander being on the mound and Pressly only going 0.1 innings yesterday (making him likely available for tonight’s game) leads me to believe the Astros will take this one. Astros run line at -1.5 is currently at +145 if you’re feeling like making more of a gamble for a higher payoff, although I’d stick with ML in this one as the Brewers are a solid ball club with Woodruff on the mound.
