Matchup Preview
The Jays come to Minute Maid tonight to open up a 3 game series against the ‘Stros. The two teams records are basically reversed, Astros being 46-23 and Toronto being 25-43. The .500 Gerrit Cole gets the nod for the Astros tonight as Aaron Sanchez will take the mound for the Jays.
5-5 on the season, Cole has posted an ERA of 3.72 and fanned 130 (leads the MLB) on the year. At home, He’s 3-2 and has allowed 32 hits through 44.1 innings. He fanned 14 in his last outing against Baltimore.

Astros Analysis
The Astros are coming off a 1-1 series split with the Brewers. They’re first in the AL West by 9.5 games, and they should be able to take at least two against the Jays to pull even further ahead.
Despite being 7-3 in their last 10, the bats have been cooling off for the Astros as of late. Stubbs is the only Astro hitting above .300 in the last week, and he’s only had 3 ABs. Gurriel is hitting the next best, with an average of .273 and 5 RBIs. In limited appearances against Sanchez, Brantley is hitting .333 in 3 ABs. Bregman is 1-4, and Reddick is hitting .200 in 5 ABs.
Despite a record of just 5-5, Cole has posted impressive numbers on the year, especially in the SO category. His last start fanning 14 marked his 7th double-digit strikeout start on the year. That being said, Cole is only 1-2 when the Astros put up 3-5 runs in a game with an ERA of 5.60. Not surprisingly, he’s 4-0 when the Astros score 6+, but his ERA then drops to 2.82. Maybe high pressure situations aren’t his strong suit.
Blue Jays Starting Lineup
1. C. Biggio, 2B (L)
2. V. Guerrero Jr., 3B (R)
3. L. Gurriel, LF (R)
4. R. Grichuk, RF (R)
5. J. Smoak, 1B (S)
6. T. Hernandez, CF (R)
7. R. Tellez, DH (L)
8. F. Galvis, SS (S)
9. D. Jansen, C (R)
SP. A. Sanchez (R), 3-7
Blue Jays Analysis
I wouldn’t be surprised if not a single person in Toronto tuned into this game tonight. Partly because of the uproar on account of the Raptors winning the NBA Championship yesterday, but also because the team simply hasn’t been very good this year. However, with Biggio and Vlad Jr. in the lineup, it’s a team to be watched through the next few years. Biggio went yard twice in yesterday’s Jays’ victory against Baltimore.
Toronto’s bats really haven’t been the issue this season. Over the Last week Gurriel and Guerrero Jr. are in the .400s in terms of BA. Jansen isn’t far behind hitting .357. Not many in the Jays’ projected lineup have faced Gerrit Cole, but Freddy Galvis is hitting an even .200 through 15 ABs with 1 HR and 2 RBIs off the right-hander.
Pitching for Toronto has been a point of contention. Sanchez is coming off two bad starts and will really look to turn things around in tonight’s game. A win against the ‘Stros would do a lot for his confidence as well as the morale of the team. He’s 1-4 on the road this year.
Astros vs Brewers Betting Odds
The line is currently set at Blue Jays +255 Astros -310 after opening at Jays +210 ‘Stros -250. If the line doesn’t spell it out, I’ll do it for you. The Blue Jays won’t win tonight. This Astros team, despite being slightly cold at the plate lately, will find a way to strong-arm a win. If you really want to bet this game, I like Astros -1.5(-150), which is the current line.
