Houston Rockets vs. Memphis Grizzlies Preview

The Houston Rockets (24-18) host the Memphis Grizzlies (19-23) tonight in a Southwest Division battle.

The Rockets are currently in sixth place in the West, have won seven of their last ten, but dropped their most recent game. Memphis, meanwhile, has continued to struggle. They are second to last in the Western Conference, are coming in off of a loss and have only won three of their last 10.

This will be the third game of the season series between the Rockets and Grizzlies, and the Grizzlies are hoping to stop the Rockets from going 3-0.

In the first matchup, James Harden led Houston to a 105-97 win with 32 points and 12 rebounds, while Mike Conley paced the Grizzlies with 22 points and six assists.

Back on New Year’s Eve, Harden led the Rockets again to a 113-101 win, and finishing with 43 points and 13 assists. Kyle Anderson led the Grizzlies with 20 points and five assists.

Rockets Analysis

Houston RocketsTonight’s game will be the second of a back-to-back for the Rockets, who blew a 12-point lead last night against the Orlando Magic and lost 109-116.

Houston had done well against tough competition lately but had a letdown at the hands of a lesser team in Orlando that has been surprising a few teams lately.

James Harden had 38 points and 12 assists, but he could not hit much from long-range, hitting only a single three-pointer of the 17 he attempted. Austin Rivers has continued to play well, putting up 25 points, so you could make the argument that Harden passing up a few of those three-point attempts could’ve made a positive impact, but it’s hard to go against Harden as your best scoring options.

Danuel House has also continued to play well in the absence of Chris Paul.

Grizzlies Analysis

Memphis GrizzliesLike the Rockets, Memphis also blew a 12-point lead in their 108-112 loss to the Miami Heat. It was also disappointing because it followed a strong win over the San Antonio Spurs.

Against the Heat, Marc Gasol’s solid game against the Spurs became a distant memory as he finished with just 15 points and five rebounds. The Grizzlies have had to utilize bench players like Shelvin Mack and JaMychal Green when they don’t get enough offensive firepower from the starters. Against the Heat, it was basically Mike Conley and Jaren Jackson Jr. who showed up.

So far, the trade for Justin Holiday hasn’t seemed to have much of an impact as he’s averaged just over three points and hasn’t been the playmaker they expected, at least not yet.
