Miami Heat at Houston Rockets 2/28/19: Starting Lineups, Matchup Preview, Betting Odds

Miami Heat at Houston Rockets Preview

The Miami Heat have some work to do if they want to get into playoff contention, and they got a big win last night as Dwyane Wade hit a game-winner over the Golden State Warriors to gain some momentum. But they won’t have much time to celebrate as they have a back-to-back against another Western Conference contender, the Houston Rockets, tonight.

Miami is 27-33 on the season and 10th in the Eastern Conference, just a half-game behind the Charlotte Hornets, who are in the eight and final playoff spot. Miami will have 22 games left, including tonight’s game to try and make up that difference. Miami is 3-7 in their last ten. Houston is number five in the Western Conference with a 36-25 record. They’ve won their last three games and are 7-3 in their last 10 games.

Miami took the 101-99 win in the first regular season interconference matchup with the Rockets on December 20. Josh Richardson led Miami with 22 points and seven assists. James Harden led Houston with 35 points and 12 assists in the loss.

Heat Analysis

Miami HeatDwyane Wade’s last-second three to take the win against Golden State last night snapped a three-game losing streak for the Heat.

It was a big win for Miami, who really needed something to turn things around, but the Heat know there is still work ahead.

“We’ve got a tough schedule. It’s no secret, right? It’s out there. But you come in and you take it one game at a time. And that’s all we can continue to do,” Wade said after the Warriors win.

Speaking of Wade, he led the Heat in the win and came off the bench for 25 points, seven rebounds, and two blocked shots. Goran Dragic is also playing off the bench, and he had 27 points as he is still being limited in minutes and played just over 20 minutes in the game. Josh Richardson got over his scoring struggles with a 21-point performance.

The biggest concern, especially on a back-to-back, is that three of Miami’s starters played over 30 minutes, with Richardson clocking 37:43. Coach Erik Spoelstra will likely lean on his second unit players again tonight as he tried to limit Richardson and a few other players.

Rockets Analysis

Houston RocketsThe Rockets rallied late against the Charlotte Hornets to secure their third consecutive win, but just when the Rockets were all healthy, Kenneth Faried and Iman Shumpert suffered injuries in the game.

“We feel like we’ve got a chance to play with anybody as long as we’ve got our full team,” Rockets guard Chris Paul said.

The Rockets got off to a blistering pace, scoring 41 points in the first quarter, but it all fell apart in the second as Charlotte outscored them 36-21 in the second. The rally allowed the Rockets to outscore the Hornets in the final two quarters in the 118-113 win.

James Harden finished with 30 points and seven assists in the game. Clint Capela had a big game with 23 points and 17 rebounds. P.J. Tucker, who is a single-digit scorer most games as a starter, scored in double figures in two of the last three games. He had 15 points against Charlotte which gave the Rockets an unexpected offensive boost. Chris Paul added 17 points and 10 assists and Gerald Green came off the bench for 15.
