Indianapolis Colts vs. Tennessee Titans Matchup Preview (9/26/21)

The Colts and Titans are two playoff hopefuls who have had rough starts to the season but remain very much alive thanks to a poor AFC South division. Indianapolis impressed me last week in keeping things close against a top contender in the Rams, but now Carson Wentz has two sprained ankles and the Colts sit at 0-2 with a handful of key players injured. Tennessee, meanwhile, delivered an inspiring second-half comeback on the road in Seattle as the Titans outscored the Seahawks 24-6 over the second half and overtime. The Titans will be hoping to parlay that momentum back into a home win over their divisional foe while the Colts will be hoping to bounce back from their poor start to the season.

Indianapolis Colts vs. Tennessee Titans Betting Odds

The Titans are trending up following an impressive comeback win on the road in a hostile environment in Seattle, and their defense played a huge part in allowing Derrick Henry to run the team back into the game. The Colts, meanwhile, are trending down due to injuries to key players on both sides of the field. The Colts were 1-point favorites in this game over the offseason when odds were first released, but the Titans have now emerged as -5.5 favorites. I’m banking on Ryan Tannehill having a bounce-back performance against a beatable Indianapolis secondary and Derrick Henry helping to keep the ball away from the Colts’ offense. An emergent Tennessee defense should also have the upper hand regardless of whether or not Carson Wentz plays through his ankle sprains. These teams are headed in opposite directions and I’m betting on it showing on Sunday.

My predictions: Titans win 30-23, Titans cover, over 50 points

Indianapolis Colts Analysis

The Colts made things interesting late in the game against the Rams in Week 2 as they hung close all afternoon and lost by just three points against one of the best teams in the NFL. Indianapolis looked much better in all facets of the game than they did in a tough home loss to the Seahawks in Week 1. The Colts’ new quarterback Carson Wentz struggled, which was expected against the top pass defense in the NFL last season. Wentz completed just 20 of 31 passes for 247 yards and a touchdown with an interception. He was also hit 11 times and sacked 3 times as the Indy offensive line, which was expected to be one of the best in the NFL, struggled to protect Wentz for much of the afternoon. That lack of protection led to a late injury for the quarterback and his status for Week 3 is now in question as he has two sprained ankles. If he can’t play, expect to see Jacob Eason take over after he completed 2 of 5 passes and threw an interception in relief of Wentz in Week 2.

Indianapolis’s typically strong rushing offense hasn’t been a factor so far this season as they have suffered from inconsistent run blocking from the offensive line. Quenton Nelson, usually the best offensive lineman in the NFL, has had a slow start to the season as he’s recovering from offseason foot surgery. Aaron Donald got the better of Nelson in Week 2, and while he certainly gets an easier matchup against the Titans, he hasn’t been himself so far this season. The Colts have run for under 4.0 YPC in each of his first two games of the season as Jonathan Taylor has totaled just 32 carries for 107 yards (3.3 YPC). Taylor needs to become more of a factor in the offense, particularly if Wentz is unable to play this week.

What impressed me the most from Indianapolis in Week 2 was a huge breakout game from Michael Pittman Jr., a second-year wide receiver. Pittman came up huge with 8 catches for 123 yards despite as tough a matchup as it gets against Jalen Ramsey and the Rams’ defense. To be fair to Ramsey, Pittman’s big plays came against primarily safety Jordan Fuller, but Pittman is emerging as the go-to receiver in this offense. Jack Doyle finished with 5 catches for 64 yards and Zach Pascal scored his third touchdown of the season to round out a strong effort from the Indy receivers. Tennessee provides a plus matchup for these players, although it may prove difficult if Wentz is hobbled or inactive.

Defensively, the Colts did decently well last week although a lack of pass rush hurt their cornerbacks’ ability to stay connected to the Rams’ receivers. DeForest Buckner had three QB pressures, but he was the only player to have more than one as the Colts finished with just five on the day. Indianapolis continues to miss top cornerback Xavier Rhodes as T.J. Carrie and Kenny Moore II were both torched repeatedly by the Rams’ receivers. While Rock Ya-Sin had a decent game, these players are going to struggle against the likes of A.J. Brown and Julio Jones in Week 3. The Colts’ run defense had a solid afternoon, but facing Derrick Henry this week is going to prove to be a monstrous challenge.

Tennessee Titans Analysis

Ryan Tannehill needed a bounce-back game after an ugly Week 1 loss in which he completed just 60% of his passes and was sacked six times. While he didn’t throw a touchdown in Week 2 against the Seahawks, he did throw for 347 yards and finished with a passer rating of 94.5 compared to 74.9 in Week 1. The Colts’ pass defense has been bad so far this season, so Tannehill should continue to progress towards the elite numbers he has put up over the past two seasons this week. When Tannehill faced the Colts last season, he was held to under 60% passing in both games but did throw for two touchdowns with no interceptions. Regardless of whether or not Indianapolis gets Xavier Rhodes back this week, I’d expect a better performance than that for Tannehill.

Part of the reason Tannehill hasn’t had to do much in some games in the past, including a 45-26 win over the Colts last year, is the presence of Derrick Henry, the best pure runner in the NFL. Henry is coming off a signature performance in which he ran the ball 35 times for 182 yards and 3 touchdowns and fueled the rare comeback win built on the ground game. Henry has also been more involved as a receiver so far this season and he has 9 catches for 74 yards so far. Despite a poor Week 1 outing, Henry is currently on pace through two games to top 2,000 yards rushing again. The Tennessee offensive line bounced back in Week 2, particularly on the right side with David Quessenberry and Nate Davis. However, Rodger Saffold left the game with an injury and Taylor Lewan did not play; Mike Vrabel said the team hopes to know more about the status of those two key offensive line starters later in the week.

A.J. Brown and Julio Jones have had slow starts to the season, but Jones recovered from just 3 catches for 29 yards in Week 1 to come up with 6 catches for 128 yards against the Seahawks in Week 2. Brown has just 7 catches for 92 yards so far this season and couldn’t take advantage of what should have been a plus matchup vs. Seattle. Brown had more drops than catches on Sunday and tweeted after the game that someone from his family told him he couldn’t have caught COVID that day if he had tried to. Luckily for Brown, his drop-plagued day didn’t affect his team’s ability to win and I’m expecting much better performances from him moving forward. Chester Rogers has emerged as the third receiver on the team and has 6 catches for 84 yards so far this season.

The Titans’ defense hasn’t improved the way many had hoped following some offseason additions as they have allowed 30+ points in each of their first two games. However, they held the Seahawks to just 6 points during the second half and overtime, and that should not be overlooked. Jackrabbit Jenkins has been solid in coverage so far this season while Kristian Fulton, despite allowing a long touchdown to Freddie Swain on Sunday, has emerged as a solid complement to him across the field. Rookie Caleb Farley will also be returning at some point soon and carries huge upside. Chris Jackson has also been pretty solid in the slot. While Bud Dupree hasn’t quite lived up to his big offseason contract as of yet, Harold Landry, Jeffery Simmons, and Denico Autry have provided a strong pass rush presence. Landry and Autry each had five QB hurries on Sunday and Autry had two sacks.

Indianapolis Colts vs. Tennessee Titans Daily Fantasy Picks

Derrick Henry should be back in the good graces of fantasy managers following an excellent game on Sunday and I have no problem spending up on him in this matchup, particularly with Christian McCaffrey not in the main slate and Alvin Kamara facing a tough Patriots defense. A.J. Brown is still a great GPP play as this should finally be the week he breaks through his early-season slump and he should have lower ownership after his slow start. Julio Jones is also worth a look – he was excellent last week. On the Colts side, it’s difficult to endorse any of the offensive pieces until we know what Carson Wentz’s injury status is. If Wentz plays, Pittman is worth a look and I don’t mind Jonathan Taylor against a beatable run defense.
