Kansas City Chiefs vs. New Orleans Saints Matchup Preview (12/20/20): Betting Odds, Depth Charts, Live Stream (Watch Online)

This is an intriguing matchup for Week 15 as the Chiefs visit New Orleans in a game that means everything still for both sides. The one seed is up for grabs in each conference and with the rule changes, there is only one bye week. Both teams still need a win for that to happen. We know the offenses will be the story of this game as they are averaging over 28 points per game this season. New Orleans will get back Drew Brees this week, but Michael Thomas is going to hit the IR. We will see two great wide receivers and another game where Travis Kelce can push his lead for most receiving yards in the league. Oddsmakers have this as a close game with the Chiefs as favorites. Kansas City Chiefs Analysis

Kansas City ChiefsThe high-flying Kansas City offense is coming to New Orleans. They are scoring 31 points per game this season but the defense has been excellent, holding teams to just 20.1 points per game. The pass defense has been strong this year, only allowing 21 touchdowns through the air but racking 15 interceptions. Now you can run on the Chiefs, as they have allowed 4.7 yards per carry. Teams don’t get to exploit it much with how the game-flow usually goes. Patrick Mahomes is a big reason for that as he averages 342 passing yards per game and has 33 touchdowns on the season. Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill are putting up unreal numbers this year, as they are both over 1,100 yards. Kelce leads the league in receiving yards while Hill has 16 total touchdowns. Quietly, Clyde Edwards-Helaire has put up over 900 all-purpose yards this season and five touchdowns. Not bad for the rookie. He will have a tough matchup against the Saints run defense that ranks first in DVOA.

New Orleans Saints Analysis

New Orleans SaintsWhile the Saints nearly returned to full health this week, Drew Brees will return but Michael Thomas will hit the IR. Alvin Kamara will certainly enjoy Brees being back under center as he was hardly used in the passing game with Taysom Hill under center. Brees and Thomas have not been on the field this season and this is certainly a game where they needed Thomas. Kamara and Emmanuel Sanders will operate as the primary targets but we could see others squeeze in, like Jared Cook. Kansas City’s run defense is an easy point to attack but keeping this a game script for that will be key. The Saints defense has been tremendous this season, holding opponents to just 18.9 points per game, and in the NFC South that is tough to do. The run defense has been excellent, holding teams to just 3.7 yards per attempt and 89 yards per game. They have also allowed seven rushing touchdowns.

Even in a matchup of two class teams, Kansas City always strikes the eye when they are three-point favorites. Neither team has been effective at covering the spread in a high number this season but Kansas City is certainly the more potent team. With Hill under center against a good defense, we will see less effectiveness like his games against Atlanta. New Orleans secondary has improved of late but this is still the mismatch for me as they have to take on Hill and Kelce. New Orleans will likely try to run the ball and control this game by keeping Mahomes off the field but that is still a tough task. I like Kansas City to cover and win this week.

Daily Fantasy Picks

With a game between the Chiefs and Saints you know there will be big fantasy scores. The Chiefs have three players that are top-three at their position in scoring this season. Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce both are on an unreal pace together which means Patrick Mahomes is up there in scoring. The Saints defense is a solid one but not a match for this Chiefs side that is averaging over 30 points per game on the year. I love the pay up options and especially Kelce this week. Both him and Hill are the primary targets on this offense and we know they are going to have issues defending them as most teams do. I would fade most of the other Chiefs players as CEH and secondary receivers are not in that great of a spot, and the wide receivers are so boom or bust. As for the Saints, Emmanuel Sanders is a cheap value option with Michael Thomas now out. Drew Brees being back is also a plus for the Saints options. Kansas City has struggled against the run but Alvin Kamara’s usage in the passing game kills his upside at his price tags.
