New York Knicks vs. Washington Wizards Prediction

The Wizards rank 27th in Defensive Rating because they field numerous liabilities that don’t seem interested on that end (looking at you Jordan Poole). Jalen Brunson and Immanuel Quickley can force Poole into the action all game and generate a ton of advantages off the dribble. Washington is also allowing the second largest restricted area field goal percentage, so Julius Randle and Mitchell Robinson can dominate inside against Daniel Gafford.

Speaking of Randle and Robinson, they have piloted New York to the top offensive rebound percentage in the league (via NBA.com). Fortunately for them, Washington is dead last in opponent offensive rebound percentage. Look for the Knicks to constantly crash the boards, produce a plethora of put-backs, and hand their offense far more possessions, thus increasing their efficiency margin for error. It’s unlikely that Washington’s offense keeps pace with New York on a points per possession basis, so New York’s extra possessions will bury them here.

On the other end, the Wizards rely heavily on their transition offense because they struggle mightily in the half-court. However, New York’s sluggish pace and offensive rebounds will drastically reduce their opportunities to push the pace, which likely slashes their offensive output.

Overall, 6.5 points isn’t enough for this Wizards team, especially since New York can pummel their weaknesses and nullify their strengths.

New York Knicks vs. Washington Wizards Prediction: Knicks -6.5

New York Knicks vs. Washington Wizards Key Matchups

Wizards 3PT Shooting

If the Wizards are going to keep this game within striking distance, then they need to have a great night from deep. Corey Kispert, Deni Avdija, and Bilal Coulibaly have combined to shoot a 41.1 3PT% on 10.8 attempts per game, so Washington’s role players are doing their job. It will come down to Poole and Kuzma, who have the potential to go nuclear or shoot Washington out of the game. Should those two combine for around a 38 3PT%, then the Wizards have a chance to hang around.
