Detroit Lions vs. Chicago Bears Prediction & Best Bet

Even after a dominant start, the Lions continue to look underwhelming fresh off letting the Saints lead a second half comeback last game after starting up 21-0. If it wasn’t for an interception and generous field position that led to a quick start, the Saints could have realistically walked away with a win. The Saints second half dominance was more telling, picking apart a weak Lions pass coverage while stalling out the Lions offense by sending pressure on Goff.

That poor level of play continues to raise red flags about the legitimacy of the Lions, now having to take on a well-rested Bears squad off a bye week. Not only are the Bears getting healthier, but they come in with massive advantages on the offensive end as we saw in their earlier contest against the Lions. Especially in the trenches, a dominant offensive line that is more than capable of holding their ground against the Lions front four. When Hutchinson and co. can’t generate pressure, then Justin Fields will find himself with plenty of open field to work with.

That spells potential disaster for the Lions second level as they have played at the league lowest rate per Def DVOA. The coverage is practically non-existent as they rank 30th in Def Pass Success Rate, and now have to sit in coverage while also constantly spying Fields who is one of the most dynamic runners at his position. He had no issue gashing this unit the first time around, throwing for 169 yards and one touchdown while also adding another 104 yards on the ground.

As for their defense, the Bears pass coverage still grades out relatively weak but their front seven has been dominant. With the Lions offensive line regressing due to injuries, their front seven should have no issue with generating pressure and plugging the running lanes as an elite run stopping unit. Better yet for their back end, Goff may revert back to his struggles with playing outdoors as there may be heavy winds. He throws a relatively weak ball, now losing out on his mid to deep throws which fuels this offense.

Detroit Lions vs. Chicago Bears Prediction & Best Bet: Bears +9 Wong Teaser Piece

Detroit Lions vs. Chicago Bears Betting Odds

After having to squeak out a win with two scores in less than four minutes in their first matchup, oddsmakers pegged the rematch to be a lot closer by opening the Lions as a -1.5 favorite. That number has since ballooned up to -4, now trickling back down to the key number of -3 as of writing. That puts the Bears into Wong Teaser territory, getting to tease them up to +9.

As for the total, oddsmakers believed points would be scored at a moderate pace as they opened the number at 46.5. Bettors have been adamant that points will come at a far slower pace by betting the under down to as low as 40.5. A tough market to gauge as the Bears offense is capable of putting up points, yet the Lions offense may regress due to the weather.

Detroit Lions vs. Chicago Bears Key Injuries

The Bears come into this one fairly healthy while the Lions injury report currently has Frank Ragnow, Alim McNeil, and Alex Anzalone all listed as questionable.

Detroit Lions vs. Chicago Bears Key Matchups

Can the Bears group of running backs find success on the ground against the Lions front seven?

Bears Rush Attack Vs. Lions Front Seven

The Bears running back room may not feature the biggest names on the roster, but Khalil Herbert, D’Onta Foreman, and Roschon Johnson are all capable runners in their own right as well as Justin Fields with his scrambling ability. Especially when running behind one of the best run blocking units in the league, a line that ranks top-10 in Adjusted Line Yards.

In fact, the Bears rushing offense has been a strong suit for them all year as they currently rank top-15 in Rush DVOA, Rush Success Rate, and Rush EPA. With the Lions regressing to league average at run stopping, as well as folding against an elite offensive line, expect plenty of rush success from the Bears running backs as they do their part to help move the sticks.
