Angels Analysis
The Angels fell to the Mariners in their last series two games to one. Despite seemingly having the pieces of a great baseball team, the Angels are just continuing to come up short throughout the season. Offensive production hasn’t really been the issue for the Halos. Instead, their team ERA of 5.07 puts them at 27th worst in all of baseball. Simply put, it’s hard to win games with a 5.07 ERA pitching staff.
Puello, Smith, La Stella, and Ohtani are all hitting .333 or above over the last week. Surprisingly, Trout is only slashing .273/.484/.333 in that same span. It’s not bad, but having a handful of guys currently outhitting (albeit over just a week’s time) the best player in baseball means your offense is in a good place. In 3 ABs, Trout is yet to get a hit off of Ryu. Pujols has just 1 hit in 6 ABs off the left-hander.
Griffin Canning is one of the Angels’ biggest prospects. Hoping to spruce up their pitching, they brought him on-board in late April. He hasn’t panned out incredibly well, at least yet. In his last outing against the A’s, he struck out a career high 8, but gave up 4 runs. Over his last four starts, he has an ERA of 2.25.
Dodgers Starting Lineup
1. Chris Taylor (R)
2. Kike Hernandez (R)
3. Justin Turner (R)
4. Cody Bellinger (L)
5. David Freese (R)
6. Corey Seager (L)
7. Alex Verdugo (L)
8. Max Muncy (L)
9. Russell Martin (R)
Dodgers Analysis
Things couldn’t be going better for the Dodgers this season. They currently sit atop the NL West with an 11.0 game lead over the next-closest Rockies. The Dodgers beat the Giants yesterday to take the series 2-1. The game ended 1-0, the only scoring done on a first inning home-run by Max Muncy. There was some drama around it, as Bumgarner was none too pleased with the way Muncy admired his shot, and the two had a bit of a verbal altercation — keeping the Doger/Giant rivalry alive.
The Dodgers have never faced Canning before, but as of late they’re hitting the ball fairly well, with the exception of yesterday’s low-scoring game. Seager and Martin both hit .400 or above last week, and Turner wasn’t far behind with an average of .368. Bellinger had a slow week, recording just 2 hits through 18 ABs for an average of .111.
Ryu continues to dazzle on the season. His all-star caliber year is so far suggesting that he could become the Dodgers go-to guy, maybe even ahead of Kershaw. He’s allowing a BA of just .171 to left-handed batters on the year, and .208 to righties. His SO/W ratio is astounding at 14.20.
Angels vs Dodgers Betting Odds
The line is currently set at Angels +160 Dodgers -173 after opening at Angels +133 Dodgers -143. The line is moving to favor the Dodgers heavily, and I don’t blame the oddsmakers. Ryu has been absolutely phenomenal on the year and so have the Dodgers. The Angels simply haven’t, and I don’t see Canning limiting the Dodgers’ bats in a meaningful way. I think the Dodgers will take the first of this two game series with ease. The O/U is currently set at 9 runs, and if I had to bet it, I’d take the under, as I see Ryu throwing a lock-down game and the Dodgers putting up 4 or 5 to win the game.
