Matchup Preview
After a 5-3 Angels victory yesterday, the two teams claiming Los Angeles are set to match up again today at Angel Stadium at 10:07 PM ET. The Dodgers will be sending Kenta Maeda to the mound, who is 7-2 on the season with an ERA of 3.48. It’ll be Felix Pena for the Angels. The righty is 3-1 on the season with a 4.53 ERA and 54 Ks.
Maeda is coming off a good start against the Diamondbacks, going 5 innings allowing just 2 hits and 1 run. The Dodgers have shown reluctance to let him face a lineup a third time, hence Maeda being pulled in just the 5th after having a solid start. He’s 2-2 on the road this year with an ERA of 5.09, but Angel Stadium being just an hour south of Dodger Stadium makes it feel less like a road game.
Pena’s last start was the worst of the season for the 29-year-old right-hander. He gave up 7 runs, 8 hits, and 2 BBs in just 1.2 innings pitched, although the Angels still came out on top 10-9 against Oakland. His start before that was more his sweet spot, giving up 3 hits and 3 runs against Seattle in 5.1 innings pitched.

Angels Analysis
Perhaps surprising even themselves, the Angels took the Dodgers 5-3 yesterday for the series opener with Hyun-Jin Ryu on the mound for their crosstown rivals. Trout and Calhoun both homered for the Halos, which accounted for 3 of their 5 runs on the day.
Although he came up big yesterday, Trout has been slumping (for his standards) over the past week. He’s hitting just .273 which isn’t bad, but for someone with a .306 career BA its slightly sub-par. La Stella has continued on his tear of a season, hitting .333 with an. OBP of .355 over the last week. He has 3 home runs and 5 RBIs in that span.
After an incredibly shaky last start, I don’t know how much I trust Pena on the mound for the Halos today. His current ERA of 4.53 is higher than he finished with in 2018 (4.18). At home in 2019, he’s allowing a BA of .240, an OBP of .308, and an ERA of 4.70. In 4 games and 12.1 innings pitched against the Dodgers in his career, he’s allowed 7 hits, 3 runs, and has fanned 18.
Dodgers Starting Lineup
1. J. Pederson , LF (L)
2. M. Muncy , 1B (L)
3. J. Turner , 3B (R)
4. C. Bellinger , RF (L)
5. C. Seager , SS (L)
6. A. Verdugo , CF (L)
7. K. Hernandez , 2B (R)
8. D. Freese , DH (R)
9. W. Smith , C (R)
SP. K. Maeda (R), 7-2
Dodgers Analysis
After falling to the Angels yesterday, the Dodgers will come out of the gats hungry today. It’s one thing to lose to a team much worse than you, but a team that claims the same city stings a little bit more. Collectively, the Dodgers had 8 hits yesterday.
The Dodgers lineup is pretty split down the middle when it comes to Pena. On one hand, Bellinger is hitting .500 off the right-hander going into tonight’s matchup and Hernandez is hitting .333. On the other hand, though, Jon Pederson, Corey Seager, and Justin Turner are all without a hit against Pena. It’s a small sample size, though, so keep that in mind.
Maeda voiced annoyance with getting yanked early in his last start. The Dodgers have reason to be hesitant to let him face a lineup for the third time, though, as he’s given up the same amount of home runs (3) facing batters the third time around in 53 PAs as 108 PAs facing them the second time through. Maeda has shut down most of the Angels lineup that he’s faced before, but Pujols and Trout are both hitting .250 off the right-hander.
Angels vs Dodgers Betting Odds
The line is currently set at Angels +135 Dodgers -155 after opening at the same. I don’t see the Angels taking 2 games in a row against this elite Dodgers team, especially with a struggling Pena on the mound. If I had to guess, I think the Dodgers will put up a ton of runs early and the Angels won’t come back. I’d take the Dodgers ML, or perhaps even run-line -1.5 as it provides better value. Another idea is taking the Dodgers and Astros ML tonight, as the Astros have Peacock on the mound (5-3, 3.20 ERA). With the two teams doing as well as they have been this year, the parlay statistically just has a good chance of hitting any given night.
