Matchup Preview
After Lester got hit with a ball up the middle in last night’s game, the Dodgers proceeded to rock the veteran, putting up 6 runs on 3 home runs. The Cubs initial 3 runs on 2 dingers of their own wasn’t enough to hold them over as they ultimately lost 7-3. Tonight’s matchup is Rich Hill for the Dodgers vs. Kyle Hendricks for the Cubs.
Rich Hill, a former Cub, is 3-1 on the year with an ERA of 2.40 through just 8 starts due to a knee injury. Hill is 0-0 against the Cubs in two appearances, allowing 0 runs in 6.1 innings pitched against the team. He’s given up a hit to Baez and Rizzo in three at bats a piece.
Hendricks has been a shining spot in the Cubs rotation as of late. In his last 3 starts, he’s posted an ERA of 2.05 with 20 Ks. He’s 1-1 at Dodger stadium through 2 starts with a posted ERA of 6.52 in just 9.l2 innings pitched. His last start at Dodger Stadium in June of 2018 is the culprit, as he gave up 6 runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Dodgers Analysis
Exerting dominance in this marquee series opener, the Dodgers left last night’s game feeling good. These two teams have matched up in 3 of the last 4 post-seasons, so the rivalry has continued to build upon itself. As of late its been the Dodgers seeming to best the Cubs when the two match up.
Bellinger went deep twice yesterday coming into the game in the midst of a cold streak. Freese and Muncy also hit homers in the Dodger’s 7-3 victory. Over the last week, Seager is hitting .550. Turner and Freese are are both hitting in the .400s. It’ll be a tough lineup to stop, even for Kyle Hendricks. Muncy, Pederson, and Turner have all taken Hendricks deep in single digit ABs.
Hill’s last go was a no-decision against the Giants. He went 5 innings giving up 2 runs with 3 walks and 2 SOs. He’s posting an ERA of 2.40 on the season through 8 starts. He went 6 scoreless innings when he last started against the Cubs in 2018.
Cubs Starting Lineup
1. Kyle Schwarber (L) LF
2. Kris Bryant (R) 3B
3. Anthony Rizzo (L) 1B
4. Javier Baez (R) SS
5. Willson Contreras (R) C
6. Albert Almora Jr. (R) CF
7. Addison Russell (R) 2B
8. Jason Heyward (L) RF
9. Kyle Hendricks (R) SP
Cubs Analysis
Yesterday’s loss really stung for the Cubbies. Going up 3-0 in the first three innings, no one was expecting the game to turn around to be a blowout in the other direction. The bats didn’t look too sharp for the Cubs aside from HRs from Schwarber and Bryant.
It’s frustrating for the Cubs to have one of their hottest hitters at the moment, Victor Caratini (.462 avg and 4 RBIs over last week), sitting on the bench behind Contreras. I don’t blame them for not starting Caratini over Contreras, of course, but it would be helpful to have both bats in the lineup. We didn’t see him in the lineup last night, but Heyward has been seeing the ball well lately, hitting .364 in his last 6 games.
If anyone can turn things around for the Cubs on the mound, it’s Hendricks. He’s 7-4 on the year with an ERA of 3.00. He’s 3-3 on the road this year with an ERA of 4.89 through 35.0 innings. That being said, he’s also 5-2 on the season in night games. If Hendricks can go long enough to face the lineup a third time it’ll be beneficial for the right-hander, as he goes from allowing a BA of .287 the second time around a lineup to a BA of .247 the third time through (2019).
Dodgers vs Cubs Betting Odds
The line is currently set at Cubs +122 Dodgers -142 after opening at Cubs +130 Dodgers -150. If I were betting on this one, I’m hammering Cubs ML all day. Hendricks has brought out the best in the team, as the Cubs are posting a record of 8-5 when Hendricks starts this year and he’s been pitching very well lately. The over/under is currently set at 8. I’d take the over in this one, as both lineups are filled with big bats and we saw 6 home runs between the two teams yesterday off (5 of those came off Lester and Kershaw).
