Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Cincinnati Reds, 5/17/19 7:05 PM ET Great American Ballpark, Cincinnati, Ohio, TV: Cincinnati (FS-O), Los Angeles (SportsNet LA, SNLA Spanish) – Radio: Cincinnati (WLW 700, Reds Radio Network), Los Angeles (AM 570 LA Sports, KTNQ 1020)
The series opener at Great American Ballpark is set for tonight at 7:10 PM ET. The Reds are hoping to get their winning streak to 3, coming off two straight W’s against the Cubs. The Dodgers look to extend a winning streak of their own — a win tonight would secure 4 straight for the club.
It will be a battle of mediocre pitching as Anthony DeSclafani takes the mound for the Reds and Rich Hill for the Dodgers. In his last outing, DeSclafani pitched a 4 inning no decision leaving most of his pitches over the center of the plate. Rich Hill has had 3 starts this year with 0 wins and 1 loss, putting up an ERA of 4.20.
This is the the second and final series the clubs have scheduled against one another on the year. The Dodgers look to grab a win to further solidify their current 4.5 game lead in the NL West. The Reds aim to keep their streak alive to stay in contention in the Central.
Dodgers Starting Lineup
7-3 in their last 10, the Dodgers have put together quite the 2019 thus far. Cody Bellinger currently leads the league with a .401 average with 152 at bats on the year. Alex Verdugo and Justin Turner have both been incredibly productive for the club as well, each boasting over 35 hits.
Pitching hasn’t been too shabby for the boys in blue either, as their team ERA of 3.51 puts them at 4th in the MLB. Unfortunately, Rich Hill sits above that team average with a 4.20 ERA. Coming off an injury to start the year, in his last three starts he’s averaged giving up 1.13 hits per inning and has given up 5 home runs in just 15 innings of work.
Hill hasn’t had much exposure to the current Reds lineup, but from what we’ve seen in the past Peraza and Suarez hit him well. Neither Votto or Iglesias have gotten a hit of the left-hander before, so it will either be a day of firsts for them or another rough start for Hill.
Reds Starting Lineup
Much to the league’s surprise, the Reds just took 2 out of 3 against the red-hot Cubs. Baseball is a weird game, and objectively bad teams beat good ones all the time. The Dodgers are one of those good teams, and the Reds, well, aren’t, but that doesn’t mean one should count them out for this series.
A highlight of this matchup is of course Puig going up against his former Dodgers. While it isn’t the first time he’s played against his previous employer, it’s still a pretty big deal given his rocky history with the club. The Dodgers haven’t necessarily missed the eccentric outfielder, posting a 29-16 record on the year so far, but that doesn’t mean he won’t want to put on a show out of sheer pettiness.
DeSclafani desperately needs to bounce back from his shaky last start, but I’m not sure that this is the game he’s going to do that. Unsurprisingly, 3 of the bats in the stacked Dodgers lineup are .250 or above against right hander. I don’t see this matchup going well for DeSclafani, as he struggles against left-handed hitters and the Dodgers have 6 slated for tonight’s game.
Dodgers vs Reds Betting Odds
The line is currently set at Dodgers -130 and Reds +130. Despite the Reds winning their last 2, I have to stick to my gut and say the Dodgers are going to win this one. Their bats just stack up too nicely against DeSclafani.
