Los Angeles Rams vs. San Francisco 49ers Matchup Preview (10/18/20): Betting Odds, Depth Charts, Live Stream (Watch Online)

These NFC West games are going to be a battle throughout the year, but this one is going to depend on which 49ers team shows up this week. Despite getting about everybody back from a skill position standpoint, they struggled to move the ball against what is still an average at best defense. Defensively this 49ers team is banged up and they are likely not going to get better any time soon. There will be a lot of eyes on Jimmy Garoppolo this week, and not just from the ladies. His performance saw him benched last week, and whether that is injury-related, we don’t know. The Rams are 4-1 and are the team that looks to be in place to challenge the Seahawks moving forward. The Rams are -3.5 favorites tonight and there is a stretch of primetime games over a 50 over/under and this game is included. Los Angeles Rams Analysis

Rams LogoThe 4-1 Rams continue to keep pace with the division-leading Seahawks and they have done with an effective offense and a very good defensive performance so far this season. Jared Goff is completing 71% of his passes, throwing for 280 yards per game, and has eight touchdowns. He also ranks 5th in adjusted yards per attempt. Goff has played well but hasn’t gotten a ton of recognition, nor has this Rams team altogether. No surprise to see Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods doing a bulk of the work in the receiving game. They each are over 300 yards and have two receiving touchdowns apiece, although Woods does have a rushing touchdown. Josh Reynolds, Tyler Higbee, and Gerald Everett have all been the third wheel this season each having some big games.

After five games it has been a pretty even production from Darrell Henderson and Malcolm Brown so far. What has helped is the absence of Cam Akers, who is now back after missing two games this season. All have been relatively the same in yards per carry, although Henderson does lead the way with a 4.6 YPC and three touchdowns on the ground. He also has a receiving touchdown and has caught 7 out of 11 targets this season. It will be interesting to see how this committee plays out. Akers has looked good at times and was always talked about as a player that would get more run later in the season. The injury might have slowed that down. The backs will face still a defense that has limited rushing production as opposing teams average less than four yards per carry against this 49ers defense.

San Francisco 49ers Analysis

San Francisco 49ersThe season has not gone as expected for the 49ers as they battle injuries but also need to answer some questions at quarterback. We have gotten a look at a few names so far as all quarterbacks have played quite a bit. Jimmy Garoppolo is obviously the starter but was benched last week against the Dolphins. Not a big surprise as the team struggled and the Dolphins were running away with it. He will have a tough matchup this week against the Rams defense that ranks 3rd in DVOA against the pass. They rank 24th against the run, and while they haven’t allowed a ton of production they also haven’t faced a strong ground game. Raheem Mostert has looked terrific with healthy this season. He has 238 yards on 34 attempts, going for seven yards per carry this season. He has also a 9-139-1 line on ten targets in the receiving game. Without Mostert, the 49ers have struggled.

Injuries have taken a toll on this defensive side, especially in their secondary. They have also struggled to get pressure on the quarterback as it continues to be a perfect storm for opposing offenses to throw for big numbers. Covering Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods, and the tight ends of this Rams team, they will likely struggle again. They rank 23rd in DVOA against the pass and have generated just 10 sacks on the season. We saw Ryan Fitzpatrick carve them up this past weekend. This will really be a key area of the game as the 49ers defense will face some very good passing offenses over the next few weeks, and a boost of confidence would help if they can slow down the Rams.

The 49ers are 2-1 in the last three games against the Rams, but it is the Rams who come in as road favorites. Not a big surprise given the injuries to the 49ers defense and them just looking lost on offense. The Rams are 4-1 but 3-2 ATS this season. While you can look at this as a spot where the 49ers bounce back just due to a bad loss, there is a good chance this team just isn’t that good this season. San Francisco is 2-5 ATS in their last seven games at home. The Rams are averaging 27 points per game this season and are holding teams to 18 points per game. The 49ers are allowing 22.8 points per game. They allowed 25 points to the Eagles and 43 to the Dolphins, and then faced the Giants and Jets before that. This will be the best offense they have faced all year. Give me the Rams who have been playing better on both sides of the ball.

Daily Fantasy Picks

Robert WoodsThis game is intriguing from a daily fantasy perspective because you can get some lower ownership of the 49ers due to last week’s performance. The matchup is tough because the Rams defense has been extremely stout. This game is also going to be a showdown slate where we get over a 50 over/under it should be a fun one. The Rams have been a tough run defense but have allowed 55 yards per game to opposing backs. Raheem Mostert continues to look great and is certainly worth a shot in those tournaments. On the other side for the run game, there are three backs all getting touches and that is a nightmare for fantasy.

Darrell Henderson continues to be the most appealing because of red zone usage and he does usually lead in touches. Robert Woods is my favorite option from this game. The 49ers secondary is banged up and Woods has a 14.7 fantasy point floor over his last eight games, even dating to last season. Cooper Kupp comes in next for me as they are my two favorite options and you can pair with Jared Goff.
