LSU Basketball Position Groups

The LSU Tigers are coming off a whirlwind 2022-23 season, claiming the first women’s basketball title in school history. With the help of second-year head coach Kim Mulkey, the Tigers claimed the 2023 NCAA National Championship after a heartfelt battle against Iowa. Mulkey became the first women’s basketball coach to celebrate NCAA Championship wins at multiple schools, bringing home trophies at Baylor in 2005, 2012, and 2019. Mulkey hopes to continue that legacy this season and appears to be well on her way to making that happen. Since that season-opening road loss to #20 Colorado, the Tigers have been tearing away at opponents to log less than a handful of losses on the season.

LSU Point Guards: Hailey Van Lith, Last-Tear Poa

As a transfer from Louisville, grad student Hailey Van Lith is still finding her role on the LSU lineup. Van Lith has the ability to play multiple positions, excelling as both a point guard and shooting guard for the Cardinals. Head coach Kim Mulkey says she would ultimately like to see Van Lith settle into a traditional point guard role. With LSU star Alexis Morris gone from the lineup, the Tigers will need to lock in a successful point player to guide them back to another NCAA Championship win. Van Lith has proven to be a valuable addition to the team, having started in more than 20 games already this season.

Sophomore Last-Tear Poa has also spent time in the starting point guard position this season. She became a major force for the Tigers last year, playing in all 36 games and logging an 87.9 percent free throw success. While she started only two of last season’s events, Poa has been on the starting lineup in seven of the 26 she’s played, averaging 64.6 points and 1.7 rebounds during that time.

LSU Shooting Guards: Flau’Jae Johnson, Mikaylah Williams

Sophomore guard Flau’Jae Johnson entered this season as the reigning SEC rookie of the year. logging 10 points and 7 rebounds during LSU’s championship win last season. Johnson was featured in the starting lineup of all 36 LSU games her freshman season, averaging 11.0 points and 5.9 rebounds. She’s already surpassed that average this year, logging an average 13.6 points and 5.4 rebounds during her 25 appearances — 23 of which she’s started.

Five-star prospect Mikaylah Williams wasted no time becoming an integral part of the LSU starting lineup. The freshman has been on the starting lineup for every LSU game this season, averaging 15.4 points and 4.9 rebounds during that time. Williams made especially efficient use of her 36 minutes on the floor against Kent State this season, logging 42 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists.

LSU Forwards: Angel Reese, Aneesah Morrow, Sa’Myah Smith

Junior forward Angel Reese returns to the Tigers after last season’s groundbreaking performance that ultimately crowned LSU as national champions. Reese started in all 36 of the games she played last year, averaging 23 points and 15.4 rebounds per outing. This season, we’ve also seen Reese start in every game she’s played, although she’s averaged a slightly less impressive 19.2 points and 12.5 rebounds per game — stats similar to her sophomore year at Maryland.

All-American Aneesah Morrow is another new name on this year’s LSU lineup, transferring to the Tigers this season after two years at DePaul. Morrow ranked in the nation’s top 10 last year for points and rebounds, and LSU has already benefited from that talent. Morrow logged a season-high 37 points, 16 rebounds, and 2 assists during her 40 minutes on the floor against Virginia. She’s started more than 22 games as a Tiger this season, and fans can expect to see far more of her going forward.

Sophomore forward Sa’Myah Smith returns to the LSU lineup this season after playing in all 36 of the team’s games last season and landing a position on the SEC All-Freshman team. Smith averaged 4.6 points and 4.0 rebounds as a freshman and only saw the starting lineup in two of those matchups. And while Smith won’t be able to celebrate participation in every game this year, she’s started six of the seven games she’s played, averaging a promising 11.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.

LSU Center: Aalyah Del Rosario

Freshman center Aalyah Del Rosario is a new face on the LSU lineup. Following two back-to-back state championship wins in high school,  Del Rosario has played in every LSU game this season, even starting in one. She logged her most successful outing during her 23 minutes against Texas Southern, contributing 14 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals, and 1 assist.
