Miami Dolphins vs New York Jets Matchup Preview (11/21/21)

After starting the season 1-7, the Miami Dolphins have strung together two straight wins to put them at 3-7 and a tier above the NFL’s worst. Though they’re likely still out of the playoff race, the momentum they carry into the weekend will certainly give them an edge on the Jets — one of the 2-3 teams that is a member of the NFL’s worst. At this point, not even the legend of Mike White can save this Jets team that ranks dead last in the NFL in both defense and turnover margin. In a divisional matchup that’s evenly split between the two teams historically (55-55-1), there’s a lot of pride and tradition at stake on Sunday. Will the Dolphins add to their mid-season winning streak, or will the New York Jets prove to be a momentum stopper for yet another team? We’ll find out this Sunday at 1:00 PM ET in East Rutherford, NJ.

The Pick

Though the quarterback situation for both teams remains a bit of an unknown heading into the weekend, I like the Dolphins to win in a close one. Even though the Jets have the worst overall defense in the NFL, this Dolphins offense has been almost as equally pedestrian, particularly in the run game. If the Dolphins defense continues playing like it has over the last two weeks, though, I don’t trust the Jets to score — especially with Joe Flacco at the helm. The big thing that has separated these two teams so far has been turnovers. The Jets have the worst turnover differential in the league at -15, while the Dolphins sit at -3 on the season. If the Dolphins are able to capitalize on the routine carelessness of the Jets offense early, it’ll be incredibly hard for Flacco to rally from behind.

My Prediction: Dolphins win 20-16, Dolphins cover (-3.5) and the under hits (u44.5)

Miami Dolphins Analysis

For a team that barely missed the playoffs last year, few expected the Dolphins to be battling it out with the Jets for the third place spot in the AFC East. They are one of only three teams in the NFL to rank in the bottom 4 in the league in both offensive and defensive YPG. They haven’t scored over 28 points once this season. Their quarterback situation moving forward remains unclear, though it’s become increasingly evident that it won’t be Tua.

Over the last two weeks, though, this team has shown some signs of life — particularly on defense, where they’ve allowed only 19 points over the last 8 quarters. Brian Flores has built up the versatility in this defensive backfield through the drafting of Jaelen Phillips and Jevon Holland, and it’s paid off as of late with back-to-back wins against the Ravens and Texans. Last week, they blitzed Lamar Jackson on a staggering 40 percent of plays, holding the Ravens to a season low in points in the process.

On offense, this team still has a lot to figure out. They rank dead last in the NFL in rushing YPG and 29th in average passer rating. Brain Flores has played around with starting Jacoby Brissett at QB though nothing seems to stick. If anything, it feels like there’s more of a problem now at the position than they did at the beginning of the season. This weekend, however, will be one of the few weekends where they’ll have an advantage at quarterback, and it’ll be imperative for them to take advantage if they want to maintain confidence in the locker room.

New York Jets Analysis

I had a lot of things on my NFL bingo card for this season, but seeing Joe Flacco take some starting snaps for the Jets certainly wasn’t one of them. With Zach Wilson nursing a knee injury and Mike White struggling to throw to the right team, his number has been called to lead the charge. Whether or not this is an admission of a lost season by the Jets organization remains to be seen. Either way, it’s clear at this point that the Jets are looking ahead to greener pastures down the line.

Their defense currently allows over 417 yards a game and nearly 33 points. Ironically, the only team that’s given up more total yards this season is Miami, and that’s having played one extra game. Whether it be the front seven or the back seven, this Jets team has exploitable weaknesses in all phases of their defense that often force them to play catchup on offense. Both of their wins this season have required a season high in points, and Sunday’s outing will likely require something similar.

In addition to having the lowest rated defense, the Jets have one of the worst starting offensive lines. Injuries to OT Mekhi Beckton and G Alijah Vera-Tucker coupled with a lack of mobility at quarterback tends to leave the Jets on the wrong side of the battle in the trenches. How well they’re able to fend off the Dolphins this weekend will prove crucial to how close they’re able to keep it.

Miami Dolphins vs New York Jets Daily Fantasy Picks

No team has allowed more rushing touchdowns this season than the New York Jets. Though the Dolphins rushing attack hasn’t been anything overly prolific, RB Myles Gaskin has been getting more carries each week, and this Sunday marks a perfect spot for some red zone production. Because the Dolphins offense has been an afterthought all season, he’s got great value on DraftKings, where he’s currently listed at $5,700.
