The NBA trade deadline date is March 25th for the 2020-21 season. This is two weeks after the start of the second half of the season. With names like Aaron Gordon, Bradley Beal, and Kyle Lowry being thrown around for rumors, this could be an exciting trade deadline. However, with the shortened season and chaos of playing within a pandemic, we could also see a rather bland trade deadline in comparison to prior years. Here is every trade tracked throughout the season.
Orlando Magic & Boston Celtics (March 25th, 2021)
Magic Receive: Jeff Teague, Two 2nd-Round Picks
Celtics Receive: Evan Fournier
Lineups Analysis: Boston was in need of a bench scorer and while Evan Fournier might not be the big splash fans were hoping for, he will help as a scorer. Parting way with two second-round picks isn’t a big deal and with Pritchard essentially giving Boston more than Jeff Teague, he was just a body sent over.
Dallas Mavericks & New Orleans Pelicans (March 25th, 2021)
Mavericks Receive: J.J. Redick, Nicolo Melli
Pelicans Receive: James Johnson, Wesley Iwundu, 2021 2nd Round Pick
Lineups Analysis: J.J. Redick was close to a potential buy out but Dallas move in to get a shooter on the team. This is a great get by Dallas where they needed some veteran presence in addition to shooting.
Houston Rockets & Miami Heat (March 25th, 2021)
Rockets Receive: Avery Bradley, Kelly Olynyk, Draft Swap
Heat Receive: Victor Oladipo
Lineups Analysis: One of the major trades on deadline day was Victor Oladipo heading to Miami. This gives the Heat a terrific scoring option and someone who will fit in well with the current starting five. As for Houston, they get a few role players back, but Houston is stacking picks for the future.
Atlanta Hawks & Los Angeles Clippers (March 25th, 2021)
Hawks Receive: Lou Williams, Two 2nd Round Picks
Clippers Receive: Rajon Rondo
Lineups Analysis: Playoff Rondo headed for another run? That will be the case but just with the other Los Angeles team this year. With Lou Williams struggling, the Clippers went for a pass-first option in the backcourt. Atlanta will land Lou Williams, who isn’t a real need, but he will be happy with the strip club and wing selection at Magic City.
Portland Trail Blazers & Toronto Raptors (March 25th, 2021)
Trail Blazers Receive: Norman Powell
Raptors Receive: Gary Trent Jr, Rodney Hood
Lineups Analysis: This is a trade that should work well for both sides. Norman Powell will fill a real need for Portland, who have not had consistent wing play. The Raptors get Gary Trent Jr, who is a terrific shooter, especially from three. He is going to be one of those guys who is a key piece in the league for years to come.
Denver Nuggets & Orlando Magic (March 25th, 2021)
Nuggets Receive: Aaron Gordon, Gary Clark
Magic Receive: Gary Harris, RJ Hampton, 2025 1st Round Pick (Top-5 Protected)
Lineups Analysis: Aaron Gordon was one of the top trade targets and Denver posted a package that worked for the Magic, but they don’t give up a ton. Hampton is a potential future piece and Harris will get a change of scenery after struggling. Gordon slides in right next to Nikola Jokic, where this could really work out given the versatility of this offense.
Chicago Bulls & Orlando Magic (March 25th, 2021)
Bulls Receive: Nikola Vucevic, Al-Farouq Aminu
Magic Receive: Wendell Carter Jr, Otto Porter Jr, 2021 1st Round (Top 4 Protected), 2023 1st Round Pick
Lineups Analysis: Nikola Vucevic has been one of the more underrated players in the league. He will head to Chicago where they are in a better spot to contend and will get a proven player. Wendell Carter and Otto Porter have been injured for most of their time in Chicago and will head to Orlando where they will take a shot on two young players with upside. Orlando also will get a couple of first-rounders.
Milwaukee Bucks & Houston Rockets (March 22nd, 2021)
Bucks Receive: PJ Tucker, Rodions Kurucs, 2021 Second Round Pick (Pick Swap), 2022 1st Round Pick
Rockets Receive: DJ Augustin, DJ Wilson, 2021 1st Round Pick (Pick Swap, Top 9 Protected), 2023 1st Round Pick
Lineups Analysis: Houston will continue to get their picks as they are preparing for the massive rebuild, while the Bucks will get a veteran who can help out by shooting corner threes and playing defense. Not a bad move for Milwaukee, who still remains one of the main contenders.
Oklahoma City Thunder & Detroit Pistons (March 13th, 2021)
Thunder Receive: Svi Mykhailiuk, 2027 2nd Round Pick
Pistons Receive: Hamidou Diallo
Lineups Analysis: Both teams will exchange a minor piece here as the two looks to join a new team with a chance to enhance their playing time. Diallo will have an easier time cracking the rotation with the Pistons frontcourt being limited.
New York Knicks & Detroit Pistons (February 8th, 2021)
Knicks Receive: Derrick Rose
Pistons Receive: Dennis Smith Jr, 2021 2nd Round Pick
Lineups Analysis: With New York in a playoff hunt and needing some scoring off the bench, Derrick Rose will join his former coach in the Big Apple. Rose has developed himself into being a solid 6th man scoring option, which helps out the Knicks, given they are bottom-five in points per game this season. The Pistons will get Dennis Smith, who has now been around a few years after his failed stint in Dallas. The pick is also a nice addition for the Pistons.
Cleveland Cavaliers & Houston Rockets (January 22nd, 2021)
Cavaliers Receive: Future 2nd Round Pick
Rockets Receive: Kevin Porter Jr
Lineups Analysis: Houston has been in the kitchen cooking at the hot stove. After the Harden deal, they acquired Kevin Porter Jr., who had fallen out of the Cavaliers rotation. At the time of the draft and his rookie year, he had been considered a potential steal. Since then, he has had off-the-court issues but now finds himself in Houston, where a fresh start might help out his career.
Houston Rockets, Cleveland Cavaliers, & Brooklyn Nets (January 14th, 2021)
Rockets Receive: 2022, 2024, 2026 Nets 1st Round Picks, 2022 1st Round Pick From CLE (Via Milwaukee, Four First Round Pick Swaps With Nets (2021, 2023, 2025, 2027) Caris LeVert, Dante Exum, Rodions Kurucs
Cavaliers Receive: Jarrett Allen, Taurean Prince, Rights To Aleksander VVezenkov
Nets Receive: James Harden, 2024 2nd Round Pick
Lineups Analysis: The James Harden rumors continued throughout the first half of the season, and it is now clear he was playing his way out of Houston. The Rockets will get an abundance of picks from the Nets and also swap firsts in alternating years. The one shocking part of this deal is Jarrett Allen now going to Cleveland, where they continue to add bigs at an oddly high rate. Now there might be a buyout deal for Andre Drummond down the road, and he will depart at the end of the year anyway. As for Harden, he teams up with Durant and Irving, giving the Nets a ridiculous big three. Caris LeVert would be swapped with Victor Oladipo.
