New England Patriots

New England Patriots Analysis

The New England Patriots are coming off of a week two loss to the Seattle Seahawks, who are proving to be one of the best teams in the NFL. However, I could say the Patriots are looking to be a major threat to other teams led by Cam Newton and their terrific defense. The Patriots look to regain their winning record in week three at home versus the Raiders.

The biggest question mark this offseason for the Patriots was who their starting quarterback would be? Since the signing and starting of Cam Newton, he has certainly not disappointed by the Patriots. He puts up some of the best numbers at the quarterback position in the NFL behind Belichick’s offensive scheme and outstanding offensive line. Last week he threw for 397 yards and passed for one touchdown while adding 47 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. The Patriots have a highly inclusive scheme behind Cam Newton by letting him throw in the pocket to long routes and run from the shotgun too. He has been quite a successful piece for the Patriot offense.

The Patriots wide receivers, led by Julian Edelman, have been supportive of Newton’s passing game. Edelman added 179 passing yards last week while N’Keal Harry and Damiere Byrd had 72 yards each. They have been a large supporting cast between running the ball through Newton and occasionally Sony Michel.

The defense for the Patriots has been strong for the Patriots too even while allowing 35 points to the Seahawks. They still were able to rush Wilson a decent amount and sack him twice. The best secondary in the league produced one interception against Russell Wilson last week too, something they could do more of against Derek Carr in week three.

Oakland Raiders

Las Vegas Raiders Analysis

Last week on Monday night football, the Raiders upset the New Orleans Saints by winning 34-24 behind the works of Derek Carr and help from Josh Jacobs. After barely scraping a win in week one against the Carolina Panthers, they had some concerns about the possible season success. However, they remain strong with a 2-0 record. They look to extend their undefeated record against the Patriots in week three.

Derek Carr was the most accurate quarterback last season by leading the league in completion percentage. His pass game has been running heavily through Darren Waller, who had 12 catches for 103 yards last week against the Saints. The addition of Henry Ruggs and Nelson Agholor certainly adds value to their pass game. He will need to continue his efficiency and decision making in week three against the tough Patriots’ secondary.

Josh Jacobs is a solid workhorse running back for the Raiders and will continue to run the ball successfully in the backfield. His three touchdowns in week one were seriously impressive and he will look to take advantage of his plethora of carries in week three against the Patriots. He will have a tough time against their defense but will be a big factor in the Raiders’ attempt to beat the Patriots in Foxborough.

The Raiders will need to improve their defensive play against a creative Patriots’ offense in week three. Last week against the Saints, they did not record any sacks against Drew Brees. Cam Newton has been taking heavy advantage of taking his time in the pocket and is one of the most skilled escape artists from the pocket with his ability to run the ball and power away from a defensive lineman. He will be a serious threat to the Raiders defense in week three and the Raiders will need to be creative in stopping Newton from running and passing the ball all over them as he has done to his past opponents.

QB: Derek Carr
RB1: Josh Jacobs
RB2: Jalen Richard
WR1: Henry Ruggs
WR2: Tyrell Williams
WR3: Hunter Renfrow
TE: Darren Waller

Betting Corner Patriots -6

Spread: Patritos -6
Moneyline: Patriots -295
Over/Under: 47

While the Raiders are starting to prove their worth in the NFL, the Patriots have been very successful behind Cam Newton and their defense. While the Raiders have not lost, they beat a below-average Carolina Panthers and a New Orleans Saints team without Michael Thomas. I think the Patriots will be able to win and cover their spread by putting a lot of points on the board and keeping the Raiders from being able to put points up.

The over/under is set at 47 points, but I like the over for this game because the Patriots have been scoring many points while the Raiders have been as well. The Patriots defense could shut the Raiders down, but I do not think it will keep them from contributing to the over of 47 points.

Daily Fantasy Picks

Cam Newton
Cam Newton currently ranks in the sixth position for fantasy points this season. His ability to run and pass the ball is extremely valuable to fantasy owners. He will certainly be worth the fantasy start in daily fantasy until he possibly starts going cold in the future. But, for now, he is hot and you should want to have him on your team.

Julian Edelman
Julian Edelman continuously receivers the most targets from Newton and should do so after putting up 179 yards last week. As the primary option in one of the best NFL offenses, I would start him against the Raiders in week three.

Josh Jacobs
Josh Jacobs is one of the few running backs that has all the touches to himself on the Raiders. He will always be an easy fantasy starter with his large share in the offense and his ability to produce with those touches. The Patriots will be a challenge, but with the possibility, they struggle to pass the ball, Jacobs will be the go-to option.

Darren Waller
Darren Waller seems to be hauling a lot of passes from Carr which has proven valuable in fantasy. Last season he was a top-five tight end in fantasy football and he may compete to be higher on the list as he continues to produce. He is usually underrated compared to big-name tight ends making him very valuable.
Oakland Raiders
Henry Ruggs III
Henry Ruggs III was anticipated to be a large factor in the Raiders’ offense this season but has not been producing too much with Waller and Jacobs being the offensive favorites. I would think about sitting him in week three against a tough Patriot defense. He will be worth the fantasy start once he proves he can produce for the Raiders.

Post
I have played football, baseball, hockey, golf, and basketball separately when I was young. Now I run cross country and track for DePaul University. My favorite part about sport is the mental strength. I am a big fan of all of the Chicago sports teams that don’t end in “Cubs.”
