Devils vs. Hurricanes Prediction
Prediction & Best Bet: Carolina Hurricanes 60 Minute Moneyline
The Carolina Hurricanes are coming of a big road win over the Boston Bruins. The Canes scored two power play goals in the matchup, adding to the team’s impressive special teams production. Carolina is now 3rd in the league with a 27.74% power play percentage heading into tonight’s game.
The Hurricanes are also 10th in the league on offense right now, averaging 3.39 goals per game. The top line for the Carolina offense is dangerous, with Sebastian Aho, Michael Bunting, and Teuvo Teravainen combining for 41 goals so far. The top line on defense has also been productive at generating goals, with Brent Burns and Jaccob Slavin combining for 45 points this season.
Spencer Martin started in goal last evening, posting an impressive .928 save percentage against one of the best offenses in the league. That likely means that Antti Raanta will be between the pipes tonight. The veteran goaltender currently ranks last in the league amongst goalies that have started at least 15 games with a .866 save percentage.
The New Jersey Devils could be able to take advantage of the issues in net, but it won’t be easy with Jack Hughes, who is still dealing with an upper body injury. In the team’s last 8 games without Hughes, the Devils have gone 3-4-1. The offense hasn’t actually been all that bad without Hughes in the lineup in that stretch, averaging 3.1 goals per game along the way. New Jersey still has plenty of other playmakers, such as Tyler Toffoli (team-leading 20 goals) and Jesper Bratt (team-leading 48 points).
Injuries are certainly holding this team back though, as New Jersey is missing Michael McLeod and Dougie Hamilton on top of Hughes, as well as several others skaters. At full strength, this is a tough team, but the growing list of injuries makes it tough to back this squad.
Goalie Nico Daws is projected to be in net for New Jersey tonight, but he’s in quite a slump. After a 3-1 start, Daws is 0-3 in his last 3 starts, allowing 3.6 goals per game along the way. Daws is coming off a rough loss to the Dallas Stars in which he allowed 6 goals with a .833 save percentage.
The Devils could definitely use this win to get ahead in the Metropolitan Division, with the team 4th in the division with 51 points compared to the 2nd-ranked Carolina Hurricanes at 57 points. However, Carolina has dominated this series as of late, winning 4 of its last 5 games against the Devils. Both teams have goaltending questions tonight, but the absence of Jack Hughes and the productivity of the Hurricanes power play will make the difference here. Carolina should be able to close out this one in regulation.
