New York Jets vs. Carolina Panthers (9/12/21)
A battle between two of the youngest teams in the NFL will be an interesting one as it is also a revenge game for Panthers’ QB Sam Darnold and Panthers’ WR Robby Anderson. You read that right, Darnold and Anderson are former Jets and will look to conquer their demons from New York as they take on the new regime, led by head coach Robert Saleh and QB Zach Wilson. These teams are very similar as they are both young and have not had much success in the NFL yet, and it will be a fun matchup that the rest of the NFL should keep their eyes on.

New York Jets Analysis
The complete overhaul is seemingly over for the Jets as much has changed from last season to this season. Head coach Adam Gase and QB Sam Darnold are gone after leading the Jets to the #2 overall pick in this year’s draft. They have been replaced by the new sexy picks of this year’s offseason in head coach Robert Saleh and QB Zach Wilson. Saleh was the former defensive coordinator for the 49ers and he brings energy and excitement for a Jets’ team that desperately needs it. Zach Wilson is New Yorks’ star rookie quarterback as he shot up the draft boards with his incredible senior season at BYU. Wilson is a great athlete with elite accuracy and what made him the #2 overall pick was his ability to make impossible throws on the run. Wilson will need to prove that he is the star that the Jets believe him to be because the cast of characters around him isn’t very good.
Free-agent Corey Davis has moved on from Tennessee and seems to be Wilson’s favorite target. Davis is a bigger receiver with an excellent contested catch rate and great hands, so it’s no wonder that he’s making a huge impact in a short amount of time. Besides Davis are crafty slot receiver types like Jamison Crowder and rookie Elijah Moore. These two make a living getting open in small spaces and should be great targets that Wilson can check down to.
Now we move onto the other areas of the field where the Jets struggle. New York is slowly improving their offensive line as they have selected Mekhi Becton and Alijah Vera-Tucker with first-round picks in the last two drafts. That’s nice protection for Wilson, but the other players on the line are not as good as those two and are susceptible to being beaten quickly. Their backfield also isn’t that good as running backs Tevin Coleman and rookie Michael Carter are the ones that are going to get most of the carries this season. Neither have been a feature back in their careers and I would not put my money on them making a huge impact this season.
The defense is also poor for the Jets and it only got worse with the loss of DE Carl Lawson to an Achilles injury this season. Lawson was a key part of that defense as he could sack the quarterback in a hurry, something not many of the other Jets defenders can claim. The Jets still have some nice pieces like S Marcus Maye and LB C.J. Mosely, but most of their other players are insignificant and will probably be toasted this season.
The future is bright in New York as they seemed to have found their coach and quarterback. However, they will have to do a ton for a Jets team that ranked last in total offense and the 9th worst defense in the league last season.

Carolina Panthers Analysis
The Panthers are another team that is trending in the right direction as they might have a quarterback that can take them to the next level. QB Sam Darnold has been freed from New York and found a home in Carolina. Darnold is still young, but he was scarred from the beatings he took with the Jets. If Darnold doesn’t see ghosts, he should be fine as he has an arsenal of weapons around him.
Star running back, Christian McCaffrey, is back after missing the season with an ankle injury. McCaffrey is a quarterback’s best friend as he runs the ball hard, has some of the fastest feet in the league, and can catch passes out of the backfield. On the perimeter, WR Robby Anderson had the quietest 92 catch season in NFL history and is a speedster on the outside. The Panthers also have electrifying players like WR D.J. Moore and rookie WR Terrace Marshall Jr. who help stretch the defense.
The defense is the real issue with the Panthers. Using their 8th overall pick, they selected CB Jaycee Horn who should be the lockdown corner the Panthers need. They also have some young and talented players like DT Derrick Brown, CB Donte Jackson, DE Brian Burns, and CB Jeremy Chinn who are all still developing but have shown some promise. Unfortunately, that promise hasn’t produced results as they were the 15th worst defense last season.
If Sam Darnold can prove that he was worth the 3rd overall pick in the 2018 draft and the defense takes another step forward, then Matt Rhule and company can be a lot more competitive than many think.

New York Jets vs. Carolina Panthers Betting Corner
Take the Panthers and the points in this matchup. Revenge is a powerful motivation that fuels players to play their best against their former teams. The Panthers don’t only have one of their star players playing against their former team, they have two in QB Sam Darnold and WR Robby Anderson. I expect these two to have a huge day and they will power a much better and talented Carolina team over the Jets. The Jets still have some kinks to work out before they can truly compete so I think you should take the Panthers and the over in this game.
